Hi all,

Just back from a fantastic cruise up the Essex and Suffolk coast, the low-light of which was picking up some dodgy diesel, and getting 'the bug' in our new tanks - fortunately not serious yet, and only two of four tanks are affected, as I was cautious about supplies!

We've left the boat there for the meantime, and look forward to going back for more wonderfully relaxed and rewarding cruising before (perhaps) returning to the Thames.

But, can anyone remember the article in MBM a while ago, including a test of various additives/treatments...? There was a clear 'winner'... Can you remind me which product came out best, please?

Errrr, I'm beginning to form the opinion that perhaps I should be using Soltron.... But, dear and learned fellow-stinkies, was this the product that came out on top on the test?

Hoping that someone can recall...

Thanks for the answers so far - if you're all so keen on Soltron, why?

Article was in MBM, November 2002 edition, page 60.

I just can't get my hands on Soltron in Chandlers in and around Portsmouth. Can we order it over the web Dom?

There are two listed below in the Portsmouth area. If you need to find out where they are just click on the blue bit of the post code and a map will turn up showing you how to get there.

If you wish Soltron to be in a chandler that is nearer you then please let me have the details via PM and I will contact them.

No, don't think it was 'cos if memory serves correctly they didn't actually do a proper test on it. Well that's what Dom says anyway /forums/images/icons/wink.gif.
Don't know of anyone that's used it that has had a bug problem so experience shows it works.
Is that ok hlb ?? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif Am I safe now ?

So...

Given that Fuelclear and Grotamar both came out on top (with impressive indications in the test)...

Does anyone have experience they'd like to share of these two products, and, why should I use something which did less well?

Soltron isn't a biocide (bug killer), so not suprisingly didn't perform all that well in these test. The test that Dom wanted done, is one where the diesel is tested for how well it passed through a filter after treatment. Biocides kill the bugs, but still leave the nasty gloopy bug mess intact, so the filters will still clog, even though the bugs are dead. Biocides should only be used as one of treatments, because, just like human antibiotics, the bugs will build up resistance after repeated use, and become immune to the biocide

Soltron acts in a different way, and actually breaks down the gloopy mess into fine particles, so that your filters are not clogged. As it is not a biocide, the bugs will not build up a resistance, so you can dose your tanks with it each time you refuel.

That's the theory anyway, and many users on here swear by it.

Thanks, and very good explanation too.

Alpha look in the October (I think) edition of PBO for Pat Manleys explanations on fuel contamination, avery well written and explanatory article.

I have a copy of the MBM survey (November 2002) and the results were as follows:-

MBM best value - Biobor JF
MBM recommended - Fuelclear M68 and Grotamar 71

Soltron had poor results.

yes at killing bugs in a 50ml test sample. Where were the filtration results (banging head against brick wall) Soltron IS NOT A BIOCIDE and will not give the results looked for when tested in the same manner as a BIOCIDE.

Any way I am not going over all that again you pays your money and you takes your chances. Use the biocide to kill the bugs use Soltron to get rid of the fuel filter clogging evidence!
