Diesel Repower

Typical, the seasons just started and my two BMW petrols are running just fine after spending a grand on them over the winter. Then someone finally responds to my advert to sell them, that I placed on the web six months ago......

2 grand is too tempting to miss, even though it means I'll have to lift her out for a few months while I repower.

Now the problem really begins, what to replace them with. If money was no object, then a pair of Merc 1.7TD sound good, but I certainly can't afford two.

I'm thinking about converting the Birchwood 27 to take a single outdrive, then look for the cheapest place to buy the merc 1.7.

Questions...

Any advice on converting from twin to single?

Anyone know the cheapest supplier of Merc 1.7TD's?

Any other engine/drive recommendations the cheap side of £10K?

Thanks

Umm, as someone who has lusted after the 1.7Merc I know how you feel. I had a long chat with them at the LBS and was told I needed to talk to the Sales Manager at Barrus but never did track him down. The engines are around £ 8.5K each VAT. So I don't think a repower going that route is viable, unless a blinding discount is on the cards. I did speak to Mike Bellamy at Lancing Marine and a pair of Ford Pumas 145 BHP would be possible and they do adapter plates up to my legs. Another option would be a DIY conversion of a couple of Trannie 2.5 FSDTi, conversion bits on top of the base engines would be around 2K and you'll still need legs.
Not sure a single Merc would give enough performance, especially after 2 petrols. Another option would be a single GMC V8, hunt around for a leg to fit it to though, Coastal Rides normally have a few.
Are they 6 pot beemers or 4s, if 6s then you'll have more space then I've got.
Also not sure what size holes you'll end up with the drives out, these may need glassing up and complete new holes cutting.

Thanks for the quick and informative response Tr.

The BM's are B130 4 pots giving about 120hp each.

Since BMW legs seem to be about as popular and well respected as a pre-VW air cooled Skoda, and slightly more expensive that concorde to fix, I thought it wise to start with a clean slate and avoid the Lancing option of just engines.

Thus if I'm having to mod the transom anyway, why not go from twin to single?

Really missed my chance at the 2001 Southampton show when I was offered a 1.7 Merc pack for £7.5K inc vat, but didn't want to spend that on the Princess 25 I had at the time.

Sure the speed factor is an issue. I can get 23/24 Knts from the petrols and have a bit of fun in the Humber, but I mostly venture upstream and the Trent/Ouse etc. is not the best place to own a petrol boat.

I suspect a modern single diesel package of about 160-180 hp would probably deliver similar performance, but the 1.7 is unlikely to raise it onto the plane.

I re-engined over a yr ago now, put in a VP ad31p, got it new, with dp-e drive and all the instruments and controls for £7.5K.

Talk to Jason at Espar in Marlow - they are based in Harleyford Marina, don't know what price they are offering at present, but it might worth a chat.

regards

'cos i'm tight and don't want to spend any money, i always look at the cheap option. so...

arn't the 1.7TD motors you're looking at the same as the vauxhall/iszuzu(sp) lumps? and if so cant recon/used units be marinised at a fraction of the cost of dealer engines?

just wondered... sorry for being tight /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I had heard from someone else here that VP have been doing a big repower promotion recently and with waht he was quoted it seems a good deal! He was based at Chichester and Peters gave him a fantastic deal on a KAD44 edc, drive and everything - a bit over your 10k but well under the price for 2 x 1.7tdi s

Try Marine Propulsion on Hayling Island. Andy gave me a good deal 2 years ago on Merc 2.8 D Tronics for my Sealine 285 (now sold). I took out 2 knacked BMW's and sold them for spares for just under £2000
