Diesel / Petrol ? in a 22ft boat

I think you misunderstood, I HAVE to stay within the Genmar group e.g. Larson / Glastron. If I didn't then the wholw world would be open to me and I wouldn't be having the hard choice I do at the moment. I am changing a faulty boat.

Sorry Duncan, I think you have lost the plot, I thought you realised the whole situation and the problem I faced. It has been clarified in my last post.

No Pete I have not lost the plot - 1 way or another it's all about money. If you have a faulty boat and they can't replace it with the same then the range is between all cash to you/ lesser boat + cash to you / greater boat with more cash from you.
The later is where you are focused primarily because it doesn't crystalise the financials with the third party.
You have my considered response to the option you have chosen to pursue in the pm correspondence - doesn't mean I wouldn't pursue a different option overall - get a clean break financial settlement and buy elsewhere!

Well the problem was or is I had the cheapest Cuddy in the range, so no going any further down for me, only up. Understand about the cash refund and that has already been requested from me, options are being looked at to keep me in the group, but all + cash. I felt it would be easier to try and stay within that, but it is looking more difficult, but I am trying to look at my options, and have discussed some. Seems a bit like being cornered and having to choose something you would not normally have given a second glance at. There is this glimmer of hope at the moment, but I would not hesitate to insist on cash as a last resort. Cuddy wise there is limited choice, but the big world of so many options at a bigger size is getting more an more tempting. As I have said I would love a diesel, but only on a boat I thought would be worthy of the extra £9,300 investment, and one I would keep for a reasonable time.

Following your experiences I'm surprised you would consider another Genmar boat or atleast the dealer that sold you yours.
I think I also would try for the best cash settlement possible and buy a Sealine avec diesel engine or somat like an Aquador 23 - 26.
I don't think this discussion can go much further as it is entirely up to you to decide what's best for you.

You are right, it started as a diesel / petrol debate on a 22ft, but I guess that was a difficult one as I was only really on about one boat. Anyway moving on to the possibilities of cash back, that opens up a whole new aspect. I have looked at the Sealine's and did like them although I have heard the S23 is not a very good sea boat, don't have a go at me as it is just what I have heard and not personal experience. Another fact is that a forum member test drove one with a KAD32 and was unimpressed, that worried me a bit as well. I must say though that I did look at the S28 at SBS but the S34 had a bit more to it. Interesting about the money back in 2 years if you upgrade to a bigger model, but they told me that was only on the basic boat and not any extras, like heating e.t.c., any extras you would lose the money on. If that is the case then I guess it would be daft not to work your way up the range using a basic boat at each level until you found the one you wanted to stay with. We did not feel we were ready to go bigger just yet, but the way things are going we may be forced to move quicker than we wanted and consider these options.

I should know what is on the table in the next two days, so if it is cash I will need some further advice, if not then I am still in a muddle although a petrol 220 with an upgraded engine to Gxi and SS duo prop is an option. We went out on a 240 Cabrio today and SWMBO loved it, she had seen it at SBS and thought it was a nice next step. The one we were on was a 5.0mpi DP, it went well but only a few decent trips would show the true fuel consumption on this, they reckon it does over 40mph, and uses 7 gal an hour /forums/images/icons/wink.gif This boat was £42k with the carpets, macerator and canvas, but another £9,300 for the KAD32. Just out of interest would you buy a petrol 24ft boat for that price, or go for a diesel GS249 Glastron at £45k of inferior build quaility? The reason I ask is that these are the next boats up in the range.

If you like the Larson 240 Cabrio then it should work fine for you for a few years in the Solent area as an weekender and more - my only concern would be that it is pretty loaded with extras and you might strugle to find much to add (on second thoughts....)
You are either going to feel that you have paid 2 much for a diesel, and or it's underpowered, or we will be compaining if you even mention the cost of petrol in the next 24 months - the latter is probably preferable. Note that spending large amounts of money on fuel is directly proportional to having fun whilst the diesel is an investment that has to make good over time.
You have looked at the boats, and Louise has (you say) said she likes the 240 Cabrio (which apears actually available and is pretty loaded with extras) so dare I suggest that your course of action is pretty clear? Come on it even has a DP drive!

I guess you have a point, the SS duo prop is standard on that, but you have to pay £2k + for the mpi or gxi option, I would even have to pay for this on the 220, so no extra cost really. BUT will the mpi or gxi make that much difference and save the cost, or would the standard duo prop help some way for free /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

And by the way, not wanting to sound daft, but what heats the shower water on a petrol boat? That seems a lot more appealing than the £550 option for a cold transom shower on the 220!!

Calorifier normaly. Heated from when the engines is run. Same sort of thing as the water cylinder in your central heating system.

Thanks Barry, I remember Col on about his, I just didn't know if the petrol was the same. Would a macerator to overboard at a cost of £645 as an option be something that would be required. MDL at Chatham have no pump out facility.

Can a 'Calorifier' be added to a boat at a later date?

My cuddy has presurised water, and sometimes i wish it could be heated.

Is there anyway at a flick of a switch this can be done?

I m sure you already know this really.. The basic engine and prop will get you about quite happily. If you want better performance, you ll need the injected ( +40hp?)and ss duo. There is no point in asking whether it makes financial sense. Boating doesnt make any financial sense. Wanting to up the performance makes even less financial sense. Is it more fun? Yes. Is it worth the difference? Sorry, its a purposeless question.
I rather agree with you on secondhand sportsboat with diesel. Unless the second owner is into enormous mileage, (and not the usual 50 hrs) why is he going to pay such a premium?
Go for 5.0 injected with ss duoprop. You know its what you want anyway !

A friend bought a Larson 270 last year (against the advice more experienced boaters) to use in the Solent, it was absolutely useless. The slightest waves made it slam all over the place and was not very stable. He sold it not long afterwards losing a lot of money and putting his wife and kids off boating.

In Spain I have a 4.3 175 hp V6 Volvo and it goes like s..t off a shovel. Who cares what the consumtion is, just enjoy the moment
