Because this part is absolutely crap - just about OK for a vehicle where the thing is mounted outside anyway, but its wall thickness is not so different to that of a coke can, besides the clips provided are also rubbish so I used decent & proper stainless jubilee clips !
If you are looking for reasons to use the accessories to condemn the unit itself then I suggest you give up. These heaters are intended for the automotive market, but are a direct copy of the Eber D4 and I do really mean a direct copy except the controller PCB. The heater plugs are directly interchangeable. So the base heater is, for the money, a very good imitation, just the accessories are bloody awful and completely unsuitable for a marine installation. The pump seems just fine.
Anyway I had a suitable piece of original twin wall Eber exhaust tube in my workshop, along with the seaweed Webasto silencer.

It's the same with the branded ones - you have to buy a marine installation Weberspacher setup which has a sealed silencer etc instead of the cheaper van fit kits.

Has anyone fitted an exhaust drain? Hiw necessary is it?
It doesn't appear to be included in the marine kits for the brands, which suggests it's not always necessary. Their manuals don't show it but do show the exhaust exit higher than the heater (ie condensation will run back down)

Whilst the marine installation manual shows the unit below the exhaust outlet, it isn’t mandatory, more a practicality in many cases as the unit is often located in the engine bay less than 30cm from the waterline.
There is one really good reason to locate the unit below the exhaust, though:
It’s not a good idea to have condensate running out of the exhaust and down the gelcoat as it will stain so draining back down to the condensate coil at the base of the exhaust elbow and directing to the bilge is a much better option IMHO.
Also, I’ve never seen any condensate in the bilge as it’s evaporated off by the coil ... All ends up, a good solution
