Diesel fuel quality

I have just started filling up with Diesel at the Cowes fuel barge and I have noticed that my engines are smoking more on tick over than they used to. Does anyone know if the fuel quality varies? I've been told that the best place is Yarmouth as the RNLI fuel up there and the quality is checked regularly.

There may be better controls some places than others. The only true answer is to add a fuel addative and remain safe and less smoke. Soltron is excelent.

Funny you should mention that, Clive, as I've always filled up at Cowes until recently, and found that since filling at Chi my engines are smoking a little on tickover, when they never used to. I felt I may be getting better quality fuel at Chi, but not convinced.

However these following figures re road fuel are fact, or where when I carried out these tests a while ago.
My V12 XJS with supermarket fuel, approx 220/230 miles per tank. With Shell / BP approx 280/300miles per tank.
My van with Supermarket diesel, 300miles per tank. With Shell / BP 400 miles per tank.

Don't believe it? Try it for your self

My friends Merc 500SEC would cough & splutter on startup until he changed from Supermarket fuel to BP, & problem sorted.

Based on this, I don't mind paying an extra couple of pence for diesel from the marina, if it is better quality, and goes further - but as I say, I'm not convinced

Hey Richard!

How are you doing? I've sold Central Park and now have a Neptune, Calypso. Anyhow. I have been told that you can buy different grades of Marine Diesel. Be nice if the quality was advertised as I would like to pay a bit extra for the better fuel. Saves cleaning the transom!

Good to see you on here. I heard Central Park had been upgraded from Richard & Sue D. last weekend. Well Done.

Now all you need is a couple of gas turbines, to achieve the speeds you know & love.

Dont worry to much just ad some Soltron as most folks round here will tell you it helps to stop the sooty stuff sticking to your transom. Have a few 'big boat owners' who buy it just for that reason.

The catch could be gone next time if you wait 7 1/2 hours.

Another option in your position would be to fit a couple of LPG tanks and fill them with horse manure. I'm sure you could make some kind of methane siphon which you could inject directly into your engines.
A couple of hey stacks on the fly bridge with TC horse producing the goods, relatively free boating!!!

Very funny KevB!

From the cloud of smoke that your KAD43's produce I can only assume that you have already taken this option!
