Diesel Engine Compressor

Can anyone help me please. I have a DAF DD575 120hp diesel engine on my boat and it has what looks like an air compressor between the timing chain and fuel distributor. It's not connected though, and I have no idea what it does, as I am new to boat engines. Ian
 
I thought that too, but I have a basic workshop manual for this engine's marine applications and there is a drawing showing pipes coming out of it. The picture is very vague, but it looks like one of the pipes goes to the vent on the oil fill cap, on the rocker cover.
 
Fog horn is a good idea, but not needed for ferries here! I live in Kerry on the west coast of Ireland, and the only ferry here is the Valentia Island ferry, which isn't much bigger than my boat !!!!
