If I take of the breather pipe there is substantial pressurized smoke coming out. Does that indicate blowby to an extend that I should kiss the engine goodbye?
certainly sounds as though the crank case is getting pressurised
and most likely is bad sealing between piston and bore.
New rings needed? Bore very badly glazed ? new rings and
pistons too expensive ,propobaly if you get it proffecionally done.
could be viable if you do it yourself ,how old is engine?
I very much doubt you should get rid of it. A marine diesel is a lump that should go on for ever. A rebuild by a marine engineer should be £700 - £1500, depending on the number of cylinders and difficulty of extracting it.
It you can lift it out yourself, then you can save a fortune by taking the engine to a truck engine specialist. Send injectors back to Bosch yourself.
Whats the engine? How old? If its a proper maine one, and less than 25 years old, its much better to refurbish than to replace.
Hmm in priciple I would agree. The engine is 17 years old. Got a major overhaul at 2000 USD (turns out the guys just spray-painted it). Am in Singapore and here no-one can be trusted. If the typical answer would be "get it overhauled" then I I am afraid that means for me "get a new one" . Thanks for your advise
The trouble with replacing the engine is that you will also need to modify the engine bed to take the new engine and the new bed will have to be carefully aligned. My memory of Singapore is that there are some very good engineers there, even if they are not reliable. My advice would be to ask other boat owners for good people. Try asking the local fishermen, I doubt they ever throw an engine away.
If yyou follow htis advice you will have to be prepared to insist on seeing the engine at every stage, since by the sound of it you will need the bores machined, and oversize pistons fitted. Whilst the whole thing is in bits have the bearings done as well, botton and top end and the camshaft bearings. There should be a Lucas or Bosch agent who can do the fuel pump and injectors.
If the engine maker is still current it might be better to take it to his authorised distributor/agent. cost a bit more but you will have more assurance of quality,
Good luck
Thanks Chris. I went through all of this and thousands of dollars later it still gives me trouble. Well the engine is a Yanmar 3GM30 and still in production. The local subsidiary does not carry spare parts and has 3-4 month lead time but a new one is in stock. Think a rather go that road then.
Thanks a ton for your advise and help
Get a compression test first. A good man with a tester can tell you a lot, by putting oil down the bores, looking at valve seals, etc. You just might be lucky and find the problem to be less of one than you think.
Why did you take the breather off, was there a fault does the engine run and start ok .
If so and you dicide its better to buy new well run it untill its no more .then sell it .
You see a set of Cords Rings may well get the oil problem sorted if that is , its actualy the bores or rings.
The amount of hours is quite low so could be the engine has been just on low revs to much.
Dont forget what another poster said when you compression test it if a cylinder is down then squirt some oil in give it time to circulate then check if your figure stays the same then its top end if it goes up your rings/bores have gone.
Cords rings are in Perivale West London ,I dont have their number
