Devon Mooring Wanted

I am looking for a reasonably priced, secure (weather and vandal proof) berth in Devon for a 44ft flybridge cruiser. Currently moored at Gillingham Marina on the Medway prices in the South West come as a bit of a shock! Any helpful advice gratefully received.

There are moorings available in the Exe Estuary, both for sale and for rent for this season. Entry is nowhere as difficult as the pilots say. This is my second year there. Must admit there are few facilities, but this is what makes it a relatively quiet nature reserve. Let me know if you want more details, contacts, etc.

Peter - Sorry for delay in replying - have been doing a little research on this for you. Problem is the 44' - there are few available that large in the Exe - at least I couldn't find any immediately. It may be possible to lay a new mooring, though (see below). Try the following: Exemouth docks has been converted to a marina - not many facilities, but berth rental is for 6 months starting April I think, with a different rate for winter period. Believe Keith Graham is the Dockmaster, tel 01395 269314. You could also approach Powderham Estates - they license moorings and act as brokers for licence transfer - publish a list, but nothing available over 34' earlier this year. They can be reached tel 01626 890243. There is lower Exe Mooring Authority, but they only administer licences, not transfers, and there are no new ones available. You might want to contact Andy Herbert of AH Yacht Services, Exemouth - he lays moorings and would know if there are any new spaces available. tel 01395 274926. Starcross Garage also lay moorings. tel 01626 890225. Lastly, try Retreat Boatyard, 01392 874720 or Trent Boatyard in Topsham, don't know their number. I will keep my eyes open - things appear on local club bulletin boards. If I see anything your size I'll let you know. If you do look seriously at the Exe, let me know before you make a final decision - I will give you further (private) comments via email.
