I posted recently that a kind pal is giving me his Mirror dinghy - my first sailing boat. I've now secured a trailer and hope to have the dinghy home for the weekend. I also previously mentioned that my wife did not share my excitement about me having 'a second bloody boat'.

This evening my wife caught me looking at a website before I could close the browser window ( ! ). I was certain she would be annoyed at what I was looking at it but couldn't think of a plan aside from acting as if the site was a perfectly reasonable thing to be looking at.The site in question was for a waterpark in the lake district that had wooden cabins and sailing plus bar, kids playgorund etc. To my complete amazement she said it wasn't a bad idea but not an option for our summer holiday because 'I think you can only tow the dinghy at 50 mph and it would take too long to get there. Why not see if you can find somwhere similar in Devon or Cornwall'?

Now, this may be some sort of slipper trick woman thing. Or maybe she has realised her escape from the (tent) camping holiday I'd previously proposed may be found by upgrading to a cabin or caravan with hair dryer - on the condition that the dinghy comes too. Who knows? BUT, I'd be mad not to try to make something of this while the moment is right.

Does anybody know of a cabin or static caravan (not camping) site in the S.W. with a sailing lake actually on the grounds plus a bar, shop, playgorund and anything else that might sell the place to my Mrs? As always, my google works as well as your but I'm very interested in forumites experience / knowledge.

Thank you!

P.S. I wouldn't actually try to use the boat every day, think my son would love it, understand the importance of balance in a relationship, would happily visit a retail outlet 'village' etc etc etc.

Roadford Lake, with a sailing club

What about the River Exe? Lots of exploring, well sheltered cruising for dinghy, loads of alternatives for wet days, inc shopping, good bit of history and museums, near chunks of Dartmoor walking etc.

Perhaps not quite what you had in mind, but Fowey is a fantastic place for sailing - masses of space in the estuary. I've stayed many times in a cottage which is very reasonably priced. Google 'Izzy Minx Cottage'.
Good luck,
Nigel

Second what Sarabande said, and the others for that matter, but just the other side of the Bristol Channel at the top end of Milford Water is Lawrenny Yacht Station, it has all that you are asking about, including cabins and caravans, and all the sheltered water you could wish for.

Misinformation there. UK Speed Limits You are limited to 10 mph less than the effective speed limit for that road.
I have towed dinghies at 70mph on motorways which whilst being illegal isn't a hanging crime.

You can't do more than 70 mph anyway :D

Wasn't the place near Carnforth was it? Pine Lake Bit outside the Lakes.

I planned to take Aquaplane to Devon for a similar holiday to the one you are planning, reluctant partner and daughter.

I never went but I thought that they would be happy here:

and Brixham harbour master said I could keep the boat there rigged so it would be OK for me to go daysailing.

Another option which I found very good was Eurocamping on Oleron. A caravan is more expensive than camping but the family was entertained while I went sailing in my Mirror.

Suggest you try searching for 'SW Lakes Trust', they have a few lakes with boating, (own launch or hire), so you can try Cataman sailing, payments seem reasonable, glourious scenery and camping to boot.

Also some have 'on shore' activities for the children, climbing frames etc.

Usually a 'cafe' of some sort, for quick nibbles and of course Cuppa Tea or Coffee.

There are a lot of lakes in Cornwall where you can go for lake sailing and camping. I highly suggest that you try Siblyback Lake. Here are some photos and information on the things that you can do there: http://www.photofilecornwall.co.uk/cornwall_local/siblyback/. The site is actually near a holiday cottage in Bodmin Moor that's where we stayed from our booking with http://www.bluechipholidays.co.uk/cornwall-holiday-cottages. We have tried their watersports activities and it was such a blast!
