Detroit 6/71 - Work required

Seriously Alf how long will you be on the job, and are there any cheap hotels locally?
I might be tempted if I can persuade SWMBO that this is not an internet date and she gives me enough pocket money.

I'll start planning my work etc. this WE, but in principle will not be in any rush to start the job, which will due to the location (engine in the boat) not be completed in a short week-end...

Hotels, like Premier Inn are one of the options, as is B&B's .... I will probably stay on the boat if it is not too cold and I can probably offer up a cabin on-board ... may be a bit less comfortable than other options, but marina's facilities are pretty good....

If I do this work in a couple of stages (not sure about that yet as I may take time off and do this more concentrated), you need to think a bit about which part of the job you'd be most interested in ... or all of it... so if I split it up into chunks (assuming that I will prep engine, drain oil and fluids out before the real work starts)... sort of thinking along the lines of....

1) Disassembly of major items (Turbo, intercooler, exhaust manifolds, filter stacks, oilpan, and disconnect the fuel system)
2) Remove Cylinder Head, remove pistons and liners (at this stage I'll find out if liners are damaged and new parts are required)
3) Replace piston rings, insert pistons into liners and insert into block, fix and torque conrod clamshells, install cylinder head & Torque up....
4) Re-assembly of major items and fill up liquids
5) Engine tune-up (Injector timing, exhaust valve clearance, idle setup etc.... and that all important start-up).

So there you have it .... make your pick ...

I have a great deal of empathy with this thread...I currently have 6 engines and 5 gearboxes....its quite straight forward...buy 2 engines.....remove 2 gearboxes and sell...lift engines out of boat...remove boxes....rebuild boxes...fit to new engines....service new engines....break two spare engines for spares....scrap 2 long blocks....I'm fed up with humping about bloody great lumps of metal....

Makes me feel real smug in my manshed as you put it with my wee new fork lift.....................

Latestarter, I must be even more smug as I prefer the overhead crane, much easier, and it even has the creep function for precision.

Hi Alf:

Know where to come if I feel a little lazy, got the 16V 71 in an old Pacific truck I restored, at least the front comes off, and even with it on its big enough to get under the bonnet to work on.

Hi, I think I am your next door neighbour (at the marina), I will be up this weekend and most weekends over the winter, if you need a lift or anything just ask. Always have the kettle on and welcome guests etc. Hope to be this weekend to install the tube heaters looking at staying in service up to xmas and winterising for Jan – Apr, try and catch some of those cracking December days we seem to get when the boat has been put to bed and you can’t use it.

Hi Alf:

That's a lightweight one :) :) ... simple lifts ... 4x 4 Cyl heads, so no more than 80 - 90 Kg each... a bit of a pain to set the injector rack though ..

in respect to the front coming off... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5qxZm_JqM

Long wait, but started the work today (never a good thing to have two projects on the go at the same time as I'm doing one of the heads..).

Oil being drained, and dismantling started... Air filter, removed, gear control bracket taken off and intercooler removal started... No pictures today, but engine looks something like this one of the port engine.

Gone home to do some work in the house for Sunday, but should be back dismantling next Week-end and aim to get all ready for head lifting WE 7 Feb.. or worst case the following WE....

Pictures of actual work will follow in next instalment...

Finally got up to the boat ... (delayed starting as mother just gone through open heart surgery to fix a leaking heart valve, so attention got a wee bit re-directed)

Anyhoo... removed intercooler (taken home for cleaning based upon experience from port engine), turbocharger and governor today ...

Left the boat with coolant draining into bucket(s)

Next is removal of a couple of manifolds, and here's a pic of the two water temp sensors feeding helm & fly as that water manifold and the exhaust manifold next to it will be the next two items to be removed.

Will continue to post updates and apologies for the slow progress in respect to updates so far...

The intercooler will probably just be a bit clogged up after a couple of thousand hours, but that one is relatively easy to fix... One of the clamps on exhaust side of the turbo needs replacing, but otherwise it's been relatively plain sailing so far ... The biggest challenge so far has been to manage & control the small pieces, such as c-clamps and pins from the fuel rod & governor assembly whilst the desire is just to get on with the removal of the "big bits" .. so need to bring with me more small containers with lids to separate the smaller pieces from the growing pile of clamps, hoses, nuts & bolts from the bigger units before I go much further... :)

So more parts off today.... exhaust manifold and a water manifold removed. About 5 hrs work today...

Then I removed the fuel rack rod ... the pipe on the left here.....(need to remove this to get access to the head bolts.

Loosened the head bolts, then packed in for the day...

The pile of parts removed is growing....

Next I have to decide to remove head first ... or drop the oil pan .... irrespective, each will be about one days work as the engine is in situ ... only a couple of hours if engine was out of the boat....

Alf,

what's this oddly shaped and coloured thing in the (I guess) engine cylhead cover behind the exhaust manifold by the salon sliding doors?
Some sort of paper stuffed into something, or what?
v.confused or eyes are playing up.

cheers

V.
