Hate to think too far ahead on this subject as i am in the process of buying a Mobo and i think if it was 100% certain that Derv was going to be as expensive as petrol i would also include petrol driven boats on my list, some nice ones about quite cheap compared to the diesels.

Years ago my father had a boat driven on PTO, maybe a step back into the past could be a way out with Paraffin at only 80p a gallon.

Would a diesel engine run on Paraffin like a petrol one does? easy to convert a petrol engine but not sure about a diesel.

one of the practical problems of using anything else than marine diesel is the problem of how to get supplies of it!

The logistics of trying to load hundreds of litres of fuel from cans doesn't work. Getting road tankers in may be feasible but can be impossible to arrange in ports that already have their own fuel facility. If you are on a trip you have to have guaranteed fuel supplies about every 100- 150 miles for most mobo's.

Not much choice I'm afraid unless you just want to go on short trips out of your home port.
