Derision from the other place

In making my original post I was merely observing the outcome of the original assault being made on the intelligence or the integrity of our late lamented friend by all and sundry - I'm glad I belong to a yacht and motor boat club where no such enmity exists.
Still it looks as tho' I restarted something.

Chrusty,

The diesel price hike will affect us all, I happen to use 1ltr/mile at 20kts and, based where I am, it will mean that I will probably be having more weekends in France next year (24 miles to Calais).

Hmmmmm, that seems quite frugal for 200 horses?, still France can be nice, not for me though, it's full of foreigners! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In my view "we" earned it with the reception "we" gave him. There was a risk of coming across as a troll, writing what he wrote, but there was always a 50% chance that he was asking a straight question.

In my opinion, some of "we" did lay into him a bit hard, and "we" did ourselves no favours in that regard. He has now probably gone to the Mobo Forum with a view that us "we" are not very nice folks, it has certainly given fuel to all the arrogant and insufferable snobs on the Mobo forum to trot out there usual venom. Ho-Hum!

Here Here....IMHO comments not far short of offensive.....couldn't believe what I read last evening.....not proud to be a forumite at present /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Posted by Morgana, who was the most prolific in accusing the newbie of being a troll, and is obviously posting on the same subject in the other forum. Doesn't mean anything, other than that Morgana is convinced the newbie is a troll

I have just found my message box, and thanks to all the very nice mob posters who have sent me weclome posts and to the pikeys on the other board who also sent me private messages, my skin is thick enough thanks

Witness the reaction to those who gave him a decent welcome.

Totally agree with the above. I am a newbie to the forum and was delighted when I first found it. Although I have been sailing on and off for 20 years I would not count myself as experienced as most of this was for few days here and a week there. However I think I can tell when people are being rude and offensive.

As part of research for my impending early retirement (15 months and counting!) I avidly researched this site and went back to the posts from 6 years ago. As well as gaining great info (thanks to all of you) I did notice that as the years went by there was an increase in reply to posts that I can only describe as rude. Can we not go back to those earlier and dare I say more considerate days.

To make it clear I do think the majority of people on this site do show courtesy and politeness to each other, but a small minority spoils it. I would never accuse any one of trolling unless I had cast iron proof and even then I would probably ignore and not feed it. If it does turn out genuine I would not have alienated some one who could turn out to be a very good forum member

Thanks again for all the info each of you have given, which makes it so much easier for us less experienced sailors

Yep, don't really understand the hostility, there was nothing offensive in the post and to be honest after the event it all looks more than a bit childish. I have enough real life things to be angry and stressed about to be honest.

If the guy was a Troll all Morgana and the others achieved was to generate about 6 threads and tie up the forum exactly as Troll would aim to do. I think we should just ignore obviously numtyish questions. If the bloke is a clued up businessman he's not going flash out £1.50 based on what a bunch of anonymous people on a website have to say never mind £300k.

So IMHO Troll? who cares. Was asking what to spend £300k on for a suitable floating apartment a daft question? probably. Although having thought about it I'd buy a big thames barge set up for conferencing. Looks impressive and lots of accommodation.

Yep, I did consider suggesting that, "Cabbie" is for sale I believe? Somehow I don't think it's where his head is at though :-)

Nah, as a Mobo regular I saw nothing offensive.

Sarcasm was around in good measure however, but this is the Internet.... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

[/ QUOTE ]And therin lays the deception for me.... I have had the pleasure of working with quite a few 'Merchant Bankers' (as the OP describes himself in his profile) over the years, and they would NEVER NEVER NEVER approach the subject of money in this manner. Money is a subject treated with massive respect... add to this the fact that his 'friend' with a T4X something or other in the first thread became 'my several vastly experienced friends' on the thread in Mobo... (one wonders why he didn't start by asking them for a bit of guidance), all lend themselves to me being confident in my conclusions....

As ever, i am sure you'll draw your own conclusions...

Do agree about the 'ignore' bit though.... in that was my (IMHO) mistake.

Well said Neil and others. All I have to suggest on this matter is that members, if unhappy about such posts, just simply ignore them. What does it matter if the poster is a troll? Will it do you any personal harm? Will you lose any sleep? The worst aspect I find on these forums is the tendency of a few to rush to criticise others. The way some members worry about UPPER CASE use, for example, frankly makes me wonder about their mental state.

That is an option that anyone one has about any post, but your post demonstrates that people generally don't ignore them - irony perhaps. But that is the nature of forums.

I'm with Morgana on this one.

Some might overreact to using caps. It is, however, well established netiquette custom to regard this as shouting and as such, rude. If you want to challenge this view, you'll have to establish your own internet where this custom doesn't apply.

People entering a quiet pub and starting to shout at each other might be considered making things more lively by some, but will be annoying others. It's no different here.

Of course, I agree with your comments, but the written word is hardly the same as the spoken. To imply that it is rude by using upper case is to my mind childish and petty. 'Well established'? -if I may quote, 'The Kings new clothes'. I never use upper case personally to emphasise any point I wish to make, but I cannot, for the life of me, understand why those who do use it are criticised for doing so by the petty forum police. They should 'get a life'.

It isn't just the forum, if you venture further afield you will find it is internet wide - just as people generally dislike being shouted at in the real world.
