Sandbanksunsets has now posted on the Mobo forum and carefull and practical boat owners are now being made the butt of their 'humour' and even being accused of that heinous crime of being poverty stricken. Let's not mention that pc phrase 'carbon footprint'.

In my view "we" earned it with the reception "we" gave him. There was a risk of coming across as a troll, writing what he wrote, but there was always a 50% chance that he was asking a straight question.

Yes I think it was a genuine question. But we of some boating experience just shudder at the potential for him to be ripped off, buy a boat that doesn't suit him or more likely find he doesn't really get value out of the boat in terms of use.
A man has to be seriously rich to be able to afford that kind of boat only to find it was all a bad idea. olewill

In my opinion, some of "we" did lay into him a bit hard, and "we" did ourselves no favours in that regard. He has now probably gone to the Mobo Forum with a view that us "we" are not very nice folks, it has certainly given fuel to all the arrogant and insufferable snobs on the Mobo forum to trot out there usual venom. Ho-Hum!

How sad to see such a polarised view put forward. I know that such views exist but cannot understand why. One group has one preference and the other a differing one.

Because I choose to have a MoBo and you opt for Sail, provided we do not interfere with each other, I do not know where the problem is. Generalising and condemning a whole group because you come up a gainst a total prat (of whatever group) is hardly reasonable.

Both groups require similar levels of seamanship/skills to achieve safe passage for their craft and crew.

Loads of folk have 300 grand to spare, these days, some 3m.

Not me. But dont mean there trolls.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm curious about the 3m . Where does that number come from?

Maybe not a troll, but given the level of the average wage in this country, and the money that many struggle to go boating with - it was an exercise in bad taste. Very Harry Enfield IMHO.

Hi Tom,

The operative word was "the".........I do not think that everyone on the Mobo forum is either a snob or arrogant, but in my opinion, it does attract more than it's fair share of contenders. Refering to forumites as "Pikies" and other such derogatory terms does no one good service.

Interesting that you assume that I am a raggie? or do you? I have declared no allegience so far, but I happen to agree with you, Mobo or raggie, we do all have a common interest, if only that we like to be on or even just near the water. I happen to think that the Mobo fraternity has more than it's fair share of "prats", why that should be, I have no real idea, maybe it's just the nature of the beast?

Sadly though I also have to confess to believing that the "raggie" fraternity also has more than enough "prats", snobs, and arrogant people.

Never mind, all part of lifes rich tapestry I guess?

It just may be that I am being a tad niave, but I happen to think that Greg got a bit of a rough reception here on PBO. However, I think I can understand why. I for one would love to see the "us and them" thing consigned to the bin. Trouble is, neither camp seems to have a real grasp of the needs of, and considerations required by the other?

Now it may well be that Greg is simply wanting a boat for the reasons he outlined in his post, and I would be assuming a lot if I were to suggest that he might be temped to cast off his lines and go ripping into his local waters at 40 knots with a 40 foot plus lump of potentially lethal machinery with absolutely no experience whatever, other than maybe thrashing his Merc / BMW / Jag....down the M25?

Interesting thought though isn't it?......(shudder).

You have lost me?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Please elucidate further?

Morning Chrusty1, No, I did not assume you were one thing or the other, I merely used the representative "you" as an example.

Interestingly, when we took up our berth in the marina, there did appear to be a certain reticence among the other raggies close by but, as in most things, once we got to know each other, we all get along well.

Those who prefer to keep to themselves do so and the others socialise to differing levels - bit like life really.

Have a great boating season.

Morning Tom,

Well I might, when I can find a boat! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I don't know which way to go at the moment, if I were to go Mobo, I would prefer displacement, but I think I am a raggie at heart, I like the peace and tranquility, and 7 or 8 knots seems awfully fast! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Chrusty.

Chrusty,

Aah, the eternal question (well, one of them anyway). Personally, I have made the move over because I now prefer being there to getting there.

But each to his/her (mustn't forget the PC) own.

Ah yes, the retrospective justification argument, so beloved of all lawyers, myself included /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It would have been good if you had mentioned the above facts at the time our friend from Sandbanks had asked his initial question about buying a boat. But you didn't, and nor did anyone else. With one or two exceptions, they were all too busy piling in on him.

Sorry, my point stands, Troll or not.

You can only bring up these points when they come to light, unless of course you are psychic

Im afraid I did think that his original post was a wind-up and an archetypal portrayal of the yachtsman's "arch enemy" ( notice the quotes!) with the 300 Grand in the hand, the personal plate Range Rover and the property investments.

I used to think that folk with big money were a select few, as we know there are a lot of them about and Mr Sandbanks and his 300K is a bit of a minnow in that company. I was made very aware of this last summer, parked up in our 10m Westerly on the Sunseeker berth in Menorca, where the guy (friendly bloke) on the neigbouring gin palace volunteered that a nice pre-owned Sunseeker like his could be had for a mere £800,000. That was topped by the brand new 100ft Wally ( the boat not the bloke!) we encountered in Alicante.
Each to his own, but I suspected that our neighbour in Menorca was not having quite so much fun on his diesel guzzler as we were on our Storm!

Once you're talking about that kind of money, I don't think the price of diesel is of any concern to them. They're rich enough not to care.

Chrusty,

The diesel price hike will affect us all, I happen to use 1ltr/mile at 20kts and, based where I am, it will mean that I will probably be having more weekends in France next year (24 miles to Calais).
