Re: Delta Anchor\'s in Med.

don't know about special conditions in the med but here are my experiences using a delta for a year in europe and the caribbean:

in sand, it holds well but must be set gently, if you go into reverse it won't dig in. if you let it set itself before putting a pull on the chain it will set in about 6ft and stay put through anything.

in soft mud it will drag, use a fortress instead

it will hold any load in harder mud

it will re-set easily on a change of tide/wind

in general terms, it's great but have a backup for the soft stuff.

Re: Delta Anchor\'s in Med.

“My faithful anchor has always been a CQR.. until I came to the Med. Suddenly – and often – my CQR started dragging. So I bought a 30 kg Bruce but it did no better…

The Med has the most difficult sea floor I’ve ever know. What works well there would excel anywhere else. What the Sahara is to motor rallies, the Mediterranean is for anchors – a great test bed.. On the bottom there’s mostly fine sand, much of it blown from the Sahara.. Falling into the sea it forms the compact sea floors so peculiar to the Med…”

(Abstract from “Does it dig in?” P.B.O. - page 79 n° 391 July 1999..)

The Med is one of the most difficult anchoring ground.. the bottoms there are mostly hard sand and quite often covered with weed.. anchors which are good elsewhere simply don’t work in the Med.. that’s why after two years of frequent anchoring problems.. (with both a classical plough and a fluke anchors) I’ve developed the SPADE anchor., It has been designed on my chart table (sorry, not by computer!) in the Greek Cyclade islands, the first prototype has been built in a very small workshop in Ishmeler, the industrial area of Bodrum (Turkey) and the first aluminum one in Marmaris.

Now, just have a look at some tests results comparing the Delta with the Spade:

Practical Sailor (January 1999):
Delta 22 lbs overall avg. holding - 496 lbs
Spade 16.5 lbs overall avg. holding - max test limit 1000 lbs

Practical Boat Owner ( July 2002):
Delta 6 kg - holding 160 kg
Spade 5 kg – holding 240 kg

Voiles & Voiliers (May 2003)
Delta 15.5 kg – holding 400 kg
Spade 15 kg – holding 900 kg

Now, what do you think will be the right choice for the Med??

Re: Delta Anchor\'s in Med.

i was considering a spade but then someone told me they're no good for multihulls because shanks can bend.

Re: Delta Anchor\'s in Med.

Any anchor's shank can bent..

First the Spade anchor has a LIFETIME warranty..

and also people select the same anchor size for a monohul than for a multihul , although the windage and the ability to "wandering around" of a multihul is by far bigger for a multihul than for a monohul..
If you select the right size.. you will not have any problem.. Spade is the "anchor of choice" for multihul and we are equiping cat like "Catana" in France and others..

i always take the view that if a salesman is that pushy therre must be something dodgy about the product.

this is a discussion forum, the place for advertising is in the magazine.

Re: something dodgy??

The last report I recieved about anchoring in the Med!..

Will your anchor sustain an Earthquake?? A sever test!

On the night of Wednesday May 21st., the night of the Algerian earthquake, we
were securely anchored in the cove of Porto Petro on the south east coast of
Mallorca in the Balearic Islands in hard sand and sea grass - our most difficult
anchoring type of bottom.

At about 21.30 or so the eleven boats in our anchorage started wild gyrations as
a bore of water came racing out of the nearby marina. Yachts started tearing
past us as they dragged their anchors and then came racing back again as the
surge of water came back into the cove (or Cala as they are named in the
Balearics) from out at sea.

We found out over the VHF that this frightening happening was caused by the
severe earthquake 150 miles away in Algeria. For two hours were were swirled
violently in all directions, but, our new Spade 100 held firm and did not drag
one iota. We know this as we were monitoring our anchoring position
electronically as other yachts dragged all over the place. We could only start
the engine and steer around the anchor in order to avoid the other boats most of
which were totally out of control.

We came through this frightening night unscathed thanks to our trusty Spade
which stood up to its severest test yet, unmoved.

Other yachts were not so lucky as we understand since that there was quite a lot
of damage in the coves and marinas in the Balearic Islands that night.

Hope this information is of interest to you. As far as we could tell we were
the only boat using a Spade anchor that night - the others were CQR, Danforth,
Delta, FOB types

Best regards,

B. P.,

Let's discuss about anchors and anchoring questions !!! :0) :0) :0)

Ionian

I was in the Ionian 2 weeks ago, on a Gib sea 33 charter yacht with a Delta

Didn't have any problems, held where we dropped it, every time, in harbours and anchoridges...even took some pix with an underwater camera of it in the sand...I'll try and get one up here, failing that look out for them in the mag :-D

My personal choice would be a Spade though, always been amazed at how right it looks, how quick it sets and they way it doesn't bite fingers like a CQR! :)

Re: Delta Anchor\'s in Med.

i agree
last mutlihull i chartered had a woefully small anchor
CQR but it was no bigger than the one i had on a 36 ft mono and this was a 42 ft cat.
