Would a 20kg Lewmar Delta anchor be too big for my Dufour 36 ? The standard anchor is 10kg and is not reliable for my cruising ground in the west of Ireland . I use all chain rode on my windlass.
Thanks,

My view is that 10 mm chain is OTT. Weight is far more use in the anchor than the chain. A bigger anchor, 20 kg, might give you a better sense of security but 8 mm chain is plenty. I have a 15 kg Delta/16 kg Rocna with 8 mm chain on Sadler 34, which is actually almost 35 ft, 7 tons.

When we had a Jeanneau sun Legende 41 back in europe, we had a 15kg Delta with all 10mmm chain rode, never dragged once. We now have a Benneteau Oceanis 36 CC and on purchase upgraded from a 15kg/33lb polished stainles steel Lewmar claw with just 50ft of 3/8 in chain and a long bit of string. We moved to a 20kg/45lb Delta on 150ft of 3/8 inch HT chain 3/8 chain is similar to but not identical to 10mm in dimensions. In our case the extra weight up front helps counteract the 10ft RIB with 9.9HP Mercury that resides on the davits we added at the Stern I have not noticed any difference in boat performance but we no longer sail in strong winds nor have the wind against tide square waves of the Solent or The Channel to contend with. The only reason I went for 3/8 chain was to match the windlass gypsy we inherited, otherwise 5/16 ( similar to 8mm) would have sufficed)

I have a Classic 36.
I use a Delta 20KG on 30M of chain and polypropylene spliced on until 70M
Vic S says 10mm is too heavy and I agree.
I plan to change the Lofrans Gypsy to suit a smaller chain size probably 8mm.
This would allow more all chain rode to be deployed and will be safer in avoiding chafe on the rope, when anchored in rough bottom.
The 1000W Lofrans Cayman windlass is able to haul up the lot without cutting out, an important test.

I noticed recently that the recommended sizes for Delta anchors listed on Lewmar's website are different (max boat length shorter for each size of anchor) from those on the Delta sizing tables (all near identical and presumably provided by Lewmar) shown on many of their suppliers' websites (try Googling Delta anchor size images).

Whether this throws any light on the OP's question I don't know.
