delivery skipper

In passing I asked a Yachtmaster instructor, (very experienced), what it would cost for him to help with a 14 day trip from Lagos, (Portugal), to the UK South Coast, and he suggested around £2000 including expenses.

Assuming a 5 day week and 4 weeks annual holiday, £130 per day equates to about £31k per annum, so not over the top. Particularly when you consider that they are effectively 24/7 whilst on board.

And that's quite an assumption!

Consider an agreed £120 per diem, for simple arithmetic. That's £5 per hour. His/her travelling time is not funded. Nor is any specialist equipment s/he may bring - like a functioning HH GPS, HH VHF radio, charts, tide tables, almanac, LSJ, protective clothing ( oilies ), cell phone and the cost of necessary calls. Then there's the cost of liability insurance. There's also NI and income tax....

There's the constant concern that the owner may be concealing something from you, like VAT status, some dodgy equipment or hull/keel/rudder issues - or something worse.....

Still want to be a Commercial Yachtmaster?

A pound a mile was the rule of thumb when I did a couple of deliveries a few years ago.

The pound a mile rule of thumb only really works for longer deliveries where it would then come out at about £120-150 a day on average. For shorter deliveries you need to charge by the day as 150 miles could take four days of your time including travel too and from the boat.

Thank you all for your input.

It's all a bit arbitary now. The trip was with the owner of a sail boat - but not sailing!! The owner has little experience and also gets very seasick.

It would have been just 2 people, the owner + the 'hired' skipper who would have been doing almost everything.

The trip, from Port Napoleon to Cefalonia appx 7 days, 850nm appx.

Again thanks for your input. BTW £1.00 per mile still is par I think. It worked out at that price way back in the '60's!
