As autumn/winter approaches I have bought a dehumidifier.
I have tried the 'ventilate' option but still get some mould in areas where the air is still , in corners etc.

I have bought the XM 'marine' machine , this has a humidistat and auto gas reheat.

Some questions:-

1) Because the weather has been so good in Sept. I am thinking of by how much I can extend my season by using the dehumidifier and leaving all the equipment on the boat. Do you do this or do you still take everything out of the boat over winter even when using a dehumidifier ?

2) Humidistat setting. It's got wet/comfort/dry/continuous. Trying it at home in the dry air we have at the moment very roughly seems to be comfort. Do you have a setting you would reccommend ?

3) I will be using a timer. What is the best on/off profile ? My theory (garnered from some discussion in an earlier thread). On in the afternoon (air warmest , therefore lots of water in it , therefore get it out so it can not condense later) On towards the early morning (cold air , less efficient dehumidifier operation but agian get it dry before it condenses at sat 6 in the morning. It can defrost itself (one per hour) but that makes it probably only 20mins till it freezes up agian if the temp is below about 5 or 10 C.

I know I can experiment with settings and time but I live 3 hrs from the boat so any advice is very welcome.

I purchased an XM one last year & put it on the boat middle of last October through to March, set it up to drain into the sink & left it on continuous power on lowest comfort setting.
Used the boat right through the winter & you could go down in December & all bedding would be nice & dry !
Brilliant bit of kit & will be taking it down again in next 2 weeks.
Didn't notice any change in leccie consumption.
Made up a little board with edges that it sit's onto on the drainer top & also got a strap so that it cannot possibly fall over.

I have a B&Q unit. I always leave it on at medium setting, draining into the sink, no timer. It would not make any sense to have a timer. The dehumidifier keeps the boat nice and dry all the time. Removing gear from the boat? Why? The only nuisance is to store it away in a locker before a sail, and taking it out again once back, because it weighs a lot. I think that yachts should come with an incorporated dehumidifier unit as standard, damp is what make them age inside the most. My yacht is seven years old and looks and smells inside as new.
