Apart from internal layout, are these two models of Dehler near identical in terms of hull and rig?

One major difference between the two models is a significant improvement in the Central Winch System and wheel/binnacle design on the 37.

The 36 has a single electric winch mounted on a 'thwart' just ahead of the wheel, with most sail control lines led to it, through clutch banks. As the lines have to turn through 90 degrees from the cockpit coaming toward the winch, this adds friction. The 37 has two electric winches and clutch banks, mounted on the cockpit coaming either side of the wheel, convenient for the helm.

While the 36 has a 'conventional' binnacle/wheel with the wheel above cockpit sole level, the 37 has the wheel recessed into the cockpit sole and mounted forward of the binnacle, with spokes curved aft. The binnacle intself has a wide 'flat' dashboard area, enough to surface-mount a 7" plotter, 2x 'standard' marine instruments, autopilot contol, and engine controls. Other items on the binnacle are 2x additional sets of electric winch control buttons and engine switch panel - oh, and drinks holders

These are pictures of my 35CWS, but the binnacle/wheel winch/clutch arrangement is identical on the 37.

The current PBO contains an article about Dehler in which both models are discussed. It says more about other parts of the boat than the winches. I wouldn't buy the mag just for that but maybe you can refer to one somewhere.

This is my problem - there seems to be so many different versions all with the same type name. The 37cws I have has one central winch and the same wheel as the 36. It's a 1993 model. And it's a Top model - not quite sure what that signifies.

Well, that generation of Dehlers was vey much engineered a extended modular system. About the same modules could appear in any other model.

However, I have never seen the 37 CWS with 2 winsches, and the very cleverly bent wheel as the 35 have. The 35 is at the end of the range, timewise.

The 36 was in (at least) two different versions, 36 (racing) and 36 CWS. The 36 racing version didn't have any wheel, a tiller instead. Interior it was a bit spartan, still working very well. The 36 CWS had a U-sofa turned at the galley.

37 CWS was probably a middle model.

38 again was in (at least) two versions, the 38 racing and CWS. Interios of these seems to be about the same, whereas cockpit and rigg differed.

So, what is the main difference between 36 CWS and 37 CWS? Interior!

I managed to get the 37cws and 36cws handbooks for comparison. The only differences I can see in the specs are that the LOA is 0.2m more for the 37 than the 36 (lwl is the same); the mast height differs - 16.90 on the 37 and 16.92 on the 36; and the water and diesel tanks are larger on the 36. So, as Jaramaz suggests, its the interiors which are different. That's presuming that the specs are accurate, of course.

Many thanks.

Emailed the design studio and Cees van Tongeren replied:

"The only difference is the overhang aft. This is 20 cm more by the DEHLER 37 CWS."

So that's the final word on this, I presume.
