This CQR rip-off was supplied with a new Bavaria about 3 years ago. After a lunch stop the crew were surprised to find only the shank remaining. The first pic shows the shank with an identical replacement sent by the Bavaria agent.
Shows you have to be very careful with non-genuine safety critical gear.

that looks as if it had been cracked for quite a time. Did it escape preventive inspection on-board ?

It was brand new - maybe even the first time anchoring. It is a very small weld area compared to a genuine CQR.

Thanks for the warning. It shows the importance of a drop forged model & highlights the defficiancy in Bavaria yachts though like jhr said at least it makes a change to the keel dropping off /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think Sara is referring to the obvious rusting, did this not trigger concern when you were handling the anchor?

Almost identical happened to me with a Sunsail CQR - broke across the hinge - leaving only the shaft attached to the chain, and the plough in some Croatian mud. Difference was the Sunsail one was forged, but not 'Genuine CQR'. Fortunately it broke when snubbing to dig it in, not on some dark and stormy night with everyone in their pits.

It wasn't my boat, I just heard about about it and went around to take some pics.

If you look at that weld it should'nt have broken like that....a decent weld should be pretty sound.I can't help wondering if it was welded after what looks like very cheap electro plating was applied.

I wonder if they use the same company to manufacture their kee

My anchor was sourced by the Bavaria agent. Given the dates maybe this anchor was provided by Opal when the company was entering it's death spiral.

If I remember right, Bav didnt supply much as std and the agent was the one who supplied and fitted the bits.

There was a CQR already on chocks on the foredeck of my boat when I bought it....it HASN'T broken but for the use it is it might as well have, have now gone back to an old and slightly heavier Danforth which is much more reliable.

What a silly thing to say!

Anchors like this are widely available from all the major chandlery supppliers, not made or supplied by Bavaria but by agents, who usually provide what the owner asks for. If he wants a cheap anchor (as most do) that is what he gets. If he wants something better he pays for it. Same with most production builders.

And the hoary old chestnut about keels falling off - based on one incident with one model! What about the 15000 plus boats they have built in just the last 10 years with no keel issues?

Most I have seen and the one supplied originally with my boat are the one shown in the Plastimo catalogue.

All this fuss and debate about anchors, you can't beat a couple of old washing machines or a '75 Ford Escort tied to a stout rope for holding power! And what about the old time favourite, supermarket trolleys?

Go now shall I?

Feck me that is identical to the anchor sitting on my Bavaria..... (Though 10 years old now and still in one piece...)

Will a Ford Escort self set on my roller?
