Defecting to motor boats

2 * 170hp Diesels, will top out at 34kts.
Fuel consumption maybe 40L/hr at a fast cruise.
Cross channel is definitely possible in the right weather conditions.

If you like the S28, also have a look at Fairline Targa 29/30, which are similar boats.

I do like these.
When you say 40l ph is that per engine or total?

Thanks
Nick

An S28 has decent side decks, and is easy peasy to control at low speeds.
It does have a canvas top, which is great if you like to be "outdoors" sometimes.
Potential downside is that what you save in fuel, you might end up spending on "outdrive maintenance", but it's swings and roundabouts.

Have a look at the Hardy Seawings 305 which has large cockpit (I can seat 8) large cabin seating (same 8) and can sleep 6. British made hardtop with large sunroof, solid construction and stylish design.

We moved from sail to motor a couple of years ago and after much deliberation bought a Princess 35. I think that would meet most of your requirements, and you should be able to get a decent one within your budget - although there are some tired (and overpriced) examples around. They have a reputation for being solid and seaworthy boats. I would personally suggest going for shaft drive rather than stern drives, if practical. You can see some pics of ours at www.growltiger.co.uk

Can someone show me an example of a "soapdish" boat.
Genuinely confused, as no soap dish I have ever seen weighs 4000kg and has a medium V-hull

Get rid of the tent, the outdrives, widen the side decks, change the interior and the seating for something more practical for kids making a mess, totally reinforce the foredeck and fit some decent cleats and bollards( swinging mooring not wimpy marina remember ) and hey presto the S28 would be perfect.
A ton of ballast would also be useful to stop it wandering in any light breeze, that boat has got more windage than a sailing yacht.. :)
Ps..better add 3K to the price for bowthruster as well.

Personally I'd avoid anything with acres of cockpit tent canvaswork ... you'll soon get fed up with it ... so far that Princess model looks like a good bet, even with the cockpit canvas ... at least you can leave it off and still use the boat in the UK with the cockpit doors shut!

Yeah, my previous S28 got "dissed" by the broker for not having a bowthruster, but I never felt I needed it.
The engines are far enough apart, and the boat is short enough to be able to spin easily using the drives.

I think I understand where you're coming from: your ideal boat is more like this:

Re: Defecating on a motor boat

I looked at your first post and thought aha, might be worth mentioning our peche promenade Merryfisher 805 which is for sale......then I saw what others were recommending and realised that it's not what you're looking at, at all. Bugga. Never mind.

Maybe not!
The more I look the more I realise that I can afford to buy a nice sports boat but I'm not sure I can afford to run one. I was just looking at the details of a Searay 310 with twin petrol engines using 300L p/h cruising. I'm coming from a sail boat so I find it difficult to get my head around that.
Most of the time I'm going to be on the boat alone or with a couple of friends fishing. the problem is that I want to encourage my wife to join me along with my baby and dog and Mel wants comfort!
We need to look at a few boats and see what they feel like. Its one thing to look at bat porn on the screen and another to step on board and start to imagine how you will use the boat. I really want to be burning 30L an hour max so that I can head out anytime I get a window and not worry too much about the cost.
So I suppose I need to be realistic about the size of boat and a smaller inboard diesel makes sense. 20kts would be good though.

Send me a link. Who knows, It might be just the thing.
