Not wishing to squabble about it, but having access to many years of threads is one of the strengths of this forum - a lot of online information is being lost, due to fashion changes, server changes, sites closing, etc. Also, ask any boaty question and this forum is high in the Google hits, reflecting how much info is here. If that brings in new members that's only a good thing, and zombie resurrections aren't exactly blotting out the, erm, "pure gold" from the regulars.1st thread drift
Ban new members from posting on ancient threads.
To stop Zombie threads being resurrected, restrict the ability to post on dormant threads according to months of membership accrued. Eg, been a member 1 month then you can revive threads 1 year old. 3 months 3 years etc.
It will stop new members asking long inactive members where they kept the spare fuses on a boat they sold 16 years ago
I’m not trying to stop newbies searching and reading old posts, just reopening the old ones that have gone past any relevance, like a round the world trip completed years agoNot wishing to squabble about it, but having access to many years of threads is one of the strengths of this forum - a lot of online information is being lost, due to fashion changes, server changes, sites closing, etc. Also, ask any boaty question and this forum is high in the Google hits, reflecting how much info is here. There are so few of these that it hardly seems to be worth bothering about.I’m not trying to stop newbies searching and reading old posts, just reopening the old ones that have gone past any relevance, like a round the world trip completed years ago
What if I am not sure?Perhaps a little pop-up window saying something along the lines of
"Are you really sure you want to resurrect this ancient thread?"
Followed by
"Are you really really sure you want resurrect this ancient thread?"

So first you ask whether you should post before posting. Is that it?Ah, in that case you add a post to the thread saying "I am not sure that I should have posted this" and receive advise on whether or not your should have posted on the long dead thread.
Excellent idea!Ah, in that case you add a post to the thread saying "I am not sure that I should have posted this" and receive advise on whether or not your should have posted on the long dead thread.
What if I want to find out the best use of oakam or swedish tar for rigging and there is no recent thread but a clear old thread whose posters presumed to have knowledge.Perhaps a little pop-up window saying something along the lines of

And who may well have taken it to the grave. What if I want to find out the best use of oakam or swedish tar for rigging and there is no recent thread but a clear old thread whose posters presumed to have knowledge.
Im probably a coffin dodger myself - However I'd just as soon die at my work or tied up in some quiet creek I have sneaked into for lunch and for the latter there might still be a few tips that others haveAnd who may well have taken it to the grave.
