Hi
It’s a 40 yr old Hans Christian with teak decks and we have a leak in the fore cabin. We have worked out where it’s making it’s way in and it’s directly underneath the aft end of the bowsprit. So the deck king plank caulking is not accessible.
There is a gap between sprit and deck at this point of between 4 and 2 mm. It’s not enough to get caulking into the whole space under the bowsprit which is approx 5” wide.
In fact caulking the gap has made it worse as water getting under the sprit from further forward is ponded up as the caulk acts as a dam.
It’s not going to be feasible to remove the sprit without taking the rig off and we are not in a position to do that just yet.
Is there an epoxy or sealant that we can reliably inject into the gap that we can be confident will spread under the whole of the sprit and seal the point where the water is leaking through the teak deck?
I know that to do this properly we need to take the sprit off and that’s on the cards for two years time when we replace the rig but the other works in hand for this summer (we are in NZ) mean we can’t do it now.
And it does rain a bit here.
So any experience of this and / or suggestions as to a product to use or an alternative approach?
Thanks in advance
Dave
