I'm just planning a trip up the rivers in a couple of weeks time and wondering if it's feasible to get out of the Deben and into the Ore on the same tide.

The timings are clearly tight but by stretching the recommendations a bit it looks just about possible - in good conditions anyway. We can do 7 knots under power.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It is said to be possible to leave the Deben near HW and get to the Ore in time to carry the flood into the river. The only time I tried this I was forced, by my brother-in-law, to leave too late and enter the Ore on the ebb. This was in a Westerly Cirrus with a top speed of maybe 5 knots. The entrance, with an onshore wind, was ‘interesting’, and since then I have been a good boy and followed the tides. With 7 knots it should be straightforward. Ideally you would arrive at the entrance around slack water and still carry the flood as far as you wish. I’m sure you will get more precise information from locals here.

It’s only 4.1nm entrance to entrance so easy if you can do 7 knots. Even if you don’t leave the Deben until 1.5 hours before HW you will still get to the Ore in time to carry the flood upstream.

One of my favourite sails with an offshore or onshore breeze is to leave the Deben at half (rising) tide, I draw 1.6m, get into the Ore and right around Havergate island, which is almost Orford, motor back to the Ore entrance and sail or motor back to the Deben entrance to arrive at the top of the tide.
