Re: Sailing Exodus

Rob,

Interesting thoughts, it's something I've thought about. Have been there a few times, and probably again in Nov.

The majority of boating (and there is a lot of it) outside major cities, is trailered motor boats. The common theme is to head off on Fri evening, launch boat, put down a few lines or pots. Catch a few fish.Back at beach (often permanent caravan or cottage) have a few bevies.Cook fish..Eat

Sat morning. retrieve lines or pots. Barbie for Sat evening sorted. etc.

Sailing seems to be concentrated around the larger cities like Christchurch.

The way of life is like rural Britain 30 years ago, though far more boating. Very attractive idea, but not sure how I'd make a living there, or even if I'd score enough points to gain admittance.

An interesting statistic that I learnt recently:-

In 2002 the Solent Coastguard reported 3 fatalities related to sail boats (all 'man overboard incidents') and 2 to motor boats (speedboat collisions).

Re: Not only swimmers..

Please could you provide some examples of the incidents to which you refer, particularly any that involved powerboats.
