Deadly speedboat accident

Is it any worse than the Donald Campbell Bluebird video? Both should have known the dangers of very high speed boating. Had the video had shown the aftermath I would certainly be less comfortable about it. As it is, I'd say borderline bad taste.

They made movies about Donald and showed the actual footage why wasn't there out cry then.

Good thread, it offers a stark reminder of what could happen when pushing the envelope.

+1. I have no problem with MapisM's post and the video. This was a tragic event but it is nevertheless constructive and useful to know about it and be reminded of what can happen. Similarly there is good purpose in seeing and being reminded of, for example, 9/11. RIP the two souls who died.

Agreed.

For what it's worth, I also do not see any problem with MapisM posting this video. I do not have 'Flash', so I went looking for it on YouTube. It's not very pleasant but I knew that before I clicked.

As for the dangerous aspect of fast boats - We go fast because it's exhilarating. It's exhilarating because it's dangerous.

+ Another one

Since the accident 3 of the top drivers who were going to participate in speed week have changed there minds.

I think when it's been some time since a bad accident some people either forget or ignore the dangers and videos like this available brings it home. Safety needs to keep up with speed.

None of us may ever go at that speed on the water. But as long as someone does we are all in danger. The more people who can be discouraged the better.

"All in danger" it's called sport, ok extreme sport maybe! but why discourage? many forms of motor sports carry clear and hidden dangers......should we also discourage these?

A sporting event is in a defined area (although it's a real pain when it's outside your own marina) but people have to practice and that means on water that others almost certainly use. A F1 driver doesn't practice on the street where you live.

F1 probably now one of the safest forms of motorsports, however you are being rather over dramatic, this was on organised event run on a defined course/area.......!
Look I agree but my point is these boats don't only exist on a race circuit. If a boat is coming at you at 100mph you can do nothing to avoid a collision, you depend entirely on them and if they have lost control...

Same as the "dickhead" trying out his new Lambo in the wet on an A road............enough said.

The decision to step-away from these activities by some is not in reaction to just this accident, it's a cumulative effect as a result of a couple of accidents going back to around 2011 where there's been a loss of life.

Three experienced racers died in two cat racing accidents in Key West in 2011; Mike Fiore owner of Outerlimits powerboats died after an accident in a kilo speed run at Lake of the Ozarks in one of his cats in August 2014; four people (two husbands & two wives) died in July after an accident in a Skater cat at Lake Lanier before a Poker Run event.

You know social media, YouTube et al are full of morbid sensationalism. It would seem that some folks get off on this stuff. hate stuff like this but it's a reminder of what adrenaline junkieism or stupidity can cause. If you get off on speed it doesn't necessarily follow that it's the danger that results in the buzz . Raced bikes cars and zap cats, didn't do it because of the danger . Accidents will always happen but you don't have to go beyond the limit to know where the limit is.

A friend's dad competed in F1 powerboat racing in the 1980s. This happened to him. Exactly the same, except he survived. He was in hospital for months though. Lessons are not being learned it seems.

One of the other clips in the side bar shows some people nearly getting killed in a hook turn. That does have a lot of relavance to normal boating. I will make a new post about it.
