I'm thinking of doing DS power practical some time next year.
I already have Coastal Skipper sail, PBL2, safety boat and SRC. No real need for me to do this other than I get to spend 4/5 days on a boat with more the 25HP. Looking at various schools I think my current power experience would be fine so can anyone recommend somewhere in the UK to do the course?
Thanks

Mendez Marine at Swanwick on the Hamble is generally recommended, as is 5 Star Marine in Southampton. Both owners contribute on here and are well thought of.

I did my Day Skipper sail with East Anglian Sea School at SYH near Ipswich. I thought my course was excellent. Can't comment on their motorboat course, but overall the school is well run and friendly.

I'm pretty sure David had closed 5 Star Marine sometime earlier this year, which is a shame as he's a good bloke and nice instructor so hopefully is working with one of the other schools. Many apols if I'm wrong with that though, or if it's only temporary etc.

I guess with the op's question it's a case of finding a school that suits geographically, suggestions on here or contact the RYA ? And then working out who offers the best solution with regard to using their school boat over a suitable number of days.

I'm a sail yachmaster instructor so have a bit of knowledge here.

Let me first ask why you want to do a DS when you already have a CS sail?

The main difference is boat handling and MOB..nothing more. Nav is the same...crew management is easier...it's basically all the same.

So I think a power DS will be a waste of time for you. You might want to loom at a boat handling weekend rather than a structured course. Also do it on a type of boat you own or will use.

Doing a course on a single shaft when you own a twin outdrive is a waste of time...same as doing a twin course when you own a single shaft.

When people who have a sail DS tell me they want to do coastal I tell them not to bother and to go to yachmaster. Nav is Nav no matter what course you do..safety is all the same.

Your money and your choice but I know what I would do.
