Following the encouragement on my other post, I’m looking for any recommendations on where to take the Day Skipper course, and who with? I’d like to do it in tidal waters and want to encourage the boss to join in so will have a bteer chance by picking somewhere warm for her – or at least warmer than our local coast. Timing is possibly during a week at Easter or more probably a week in August so we could tag on another week as a holiday.

Try Cornish Cruising in Falmouth, Cornwall. I did YM with them earlier this year, they were very professional and taught me loads. Great area to sail too.

Gibraltar is warm and tidal :)

If you want SWMBO to be enthusiastic after the course, head somewhere warm.

I would recommend Canary Sail Nice weather, nice location and still tidal

Gibraltar has excellent schools, weather and winds.
Across to Ceuta, dinner at the Oasis, back up to Duquesa, return to Gib.
We used to fly to Malaga, twas cheaper, but, globespan have gone now. :(
Wifey loves it too.

Trafalgar Sailing in Gibraltar.

Warm, currents + tide, shipping lanes to learn about and North Africa 2 hours away.

Give capnsensible a PM, he'll sort you out in Gib.

Would agree with Duncan on Corfu.

Myself and SWMBO did our Powerboat 2 with Steve and I also did VHF. SWMBO was not at all happy in the sea but she'll now jump off the back of the boat in 150ft of water, partly due to the positive experience she gained on the course.

Easy Jet start to fly direct at the beginning of April next year but I would wait until mid May by which time the good weather is more consistant.

If you want the UK then try East Anglian Sea School, good friendly lot, good well maintained boats AND you come to the brilliant Suffolk Coast.

+ Corfu Sailing School

Try http://www.corfuseaschool.com/ . Run by Steve and Tanya from Gouvia Marina in Corfu. OK, its not tidal but otherwise covers all the bases. No connection, just a satisfied customer.

I've known Steve since he first started the Sailing School, and I've many friends who have been trained by him (Day Skipper/Competent Crew/etc) and all recommend him.
He's also affiliated to the Sailingholidays.com charter Co' for any of their customers who wish to attain further certification.
Although I've never been a customer of his, everyone I know who are, recommend him highly.

Another vote for Trafalgar Sailing. Did ours (me DS, boss Comp crew) there a year ago in September and had a superb time. Sunshine every day, reasonable winds, plenty of challenges (especially Gib bay at night) and a bit of Africa thrown in for good measure. Our tutor/skipper John was excellent with the perfect balance of patience and "motivation". The boat was a well prepared Bavaria, comfortable, plenty of space for 4 students and the meals were superb.

My boss  was a very inexperienced sailor at the time and going somewhere where we could almost guarantee sunshine and warmth was important. She had a great time and remains keen on sailing now that she knows what there is to look forward to!

.
Alba near Oban are good if you fancy some challenging waters and terrific scenery. Most courses are on their very comfortable Westerly Oceanranger 'Clear Blue'.

Also in the Canaries, have a look at Club Sail in Tennerife.

It really is important to get your partner started in a warm climate. Ask yourself just how much fun there is, as a reluctant sailer, to endure wet and cold?

+1
Everything you want there including cheap flights and a runway 5 minutes away.
Having sailed with Captain Sensible of these forums (Hercules sailing) I would recommend him very, very, highly.
