This new system is too difficult and I won't get used to it.

I know that I only have to look at the top threads with red flashes instead of searching for the flashes down through the ages but that is what we're used to not this new fangled nonsense.

I know that if I am away from my 'puter for a few days, when I come back I change the settings to see posts newer than a week or a month but it's not the point! I had my settings set to 'Newer that 12 months' intentionally because I don't like it easy. That's not what made Britain the Great country that it is.

And as for that Kim chappie adding new forums just because a member asks for it!! This is just beyond a joke!! And within a few minutes of being asked, that's just showing off. And all that in his own time, well for heavens sake. <grr>

Everything should stay the same unless a full committee of all members has been held to discuss it.

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion, and if I want your opinion, I'll give it to you.

That is totally illogical!!!!

You just contributed to my 'boring' thread and in so doing put it on top again.
By this thread being high, attention was drawn to the fact that you had made your comments about my boring thread and I am able to reply - a point I would have missed and not responded to under the old system.

I get it - you are a 'hit and run' poster who wants to make cooments, ask questions but pretend you have not contributed???

Or maybe you want to ask questions without receiving ansers????

Or maybe you actibely take part in 'boring threads' making some very good points but want to remove the response?????

In fact the jets threads had to be split into three threads because of the old system, had the new system been in place it would be a thread that had well over 100 responses - how come? Because you, above all posters, felt strongly about the points raised and heavily contributed!!!!!

I note the comments about me being new to boating - that is true, a point I have meade very clear in the jets threads. However, as a newbie, I maintain I have a right, as we all have, to ask questions amd challange anything - the responders need to justify by arguement not status. I certainly do not take any offence from such comments. Yes I did ask lots of questions and learn, although because of the system subjects tend to die off quicker thus giving some a preanture death.

I have never taken offence from a single post on this forum ever - I can hold my own and often have a good laugh at them.

You create posts about your own personal experiences, what your cook is doing etc - In my world, I hold that you have a right to do that because if I do not want to read them I do not have to. Nor can I state with any honesty that they are more or less boring than mine - the number of responses and contributions decide. I do not set myself up as a judge and pretned I am forced to read stuff I do not want to.

It is wrong to say that I keep the thread going alone - I respond to those making points. You seem to want to dictate that the conversation be killed because you find it boring BUT you just took part in it asking a question about why the internal 'prop' inside the the jet is more efficient than the normal props a shafts.

A better anology would be turning up to the pub and finding a heated discussion in the corner being held amongst those who are interested in it. In the same pub there are lots of other discussions going on that folks are partaking in (the new system clearly shows all these active discussions) and you can choose which ones you take part in. Yet the olkd system was not that clear, it had lots of dead subjects mixed with the active ones.

I do sense a little bit of crying wolf in yopur comments.

At the end of the day, I have as much right to talk about jets asyou have to talk about your cook. Or am I missing the point here?:)

you make some valid points.

At work, we have service management software. It's a computer company, but it doesn't matter what it does. fact is, there are some calls, around a hundred a day.

Now, the problem is that some of these calls are quite low priority like "how do i do this thing we plan to do next year" or |"how much for a new wotsit?" and so on. But some others are "the main servers has busted"

So, there are calls of vary age, and varying importance.

Puttem in order of importance, and the less important ones fall of the bottom almost immediately. But puttem in order of age (or last post) and even a small comment (like hahaha on this bb) whips it to the top.

A more complex algorithm is needed! We solved this by making every new call/post stay at the top until key people had marked it seen, at which point it took it's place in the hierarchy. This not a workable soluition here, and there's either dateslipping or not.

If that's the decision, then I vote it off. Not for any of the reasons you state but that it sttymies the board from both ends : for the regular contributior, there are fewer new threads, co the existing ones are still rolling. From the occassional lurker, they'll feel even more cautious about posting and forcing a thread to the top. Fewer posts over fewer threads makes this a more "serious" board, with less passing traffic, so a downward spiral ensues.

Seem to remember a lot of discussion when the idea of a "boat lounge" forum was mooted. Someone was dead against the idea, argued against it right down the line until it was decided it wouldn't happen, at which point said person piped up "actually, I think it WAS a good idea after all"....

Can't remember who that was now....... ;-)



Gludy, good points, well made. Agree entirely. It is SO much easier to log in on a morning (or whenever) and have all the new or replied to posts since last visit neatly lined up to flick through.

Also, with the amount of posting sometimes I'll log on to find an interesting thread already close to the bottom of the pile and decide there is no point in replying because the whole thread will be off the page in a hour or two and no one will see it.

New system working well and I think people are beginning to see the advantages. Certainly having to start new threads very other day like for the jet engine topic is just plain stupid, much better this way, no need for it.

Your anology does not hold water and I believe you know it.

By the way thank you for the very postive contributions made in the past and just this morning to the "boring" jet thread :)

Of course, being a 'hit an run' merchant you want to make such contributions to a thread 5 pages down the list so no one can see what you have said!!!!

I reckin you have probably already changed your mind about the dateslip ... the question is can you come to tell us that?

I think I should also make public that your love of boating and helping extended to offering to help me bring my newly purchased boat back from Port Solent to the Bristol channel. There was no gain to you, you just asked that we share the rounds in the pub. The weather stopped it happening, no fault of yours. You were willing to give up the time and experience just to help. So I know inside there somewhere is a pretty good bloke ..... just hope you have the strength to change sides on this dateslip issue :)

ooh, as ari points out, I am well known for fencejumping and completely admitting i was wrong. Being in the puter industry I am well practised. Hereabouts, I have already performed volte face on the idea of splitting the forum, and it already seems thatyour jetboat thing may well be a perfect fish-farm-proof vehicle for a round the world boating expedition, er not that I fancy the idea too much, but anyway...

Like you, happy to be proved wrong. However, getting a bb to a critical mas with lots of posties and then changing to dateslip, then losing contributors ....is not as easily changed as an opinion.
