Best meal we've had in a long time was last week in the Dartmouth Yacht Club. Mussel starter was larger, hotter and much tastier than the main course of mussels we had the previous week upstairs in Sails Restaurant, and of course at a fraction of the cost. Had a few good meals in Sails last year but won't be going back based on our recent experience. My complaint that of the first half dozen mussels I picked up only one had any meat in it was met with a shrug of the shoulders. And they most certainly were not River Teign mussels as advertised. And £6 for a prawn cocktail which amounted to about £1 a prawn (just ordinary Tesco type frozen variety, small.) was daylight robbery.

So don't go upstairs, stay down in the club and enjoy good food and friendly company. But do check first, I don't think they serve food every day.

Up Market but brilliant!

We would recommend the Angel in Dartmouth. We stayed in Torquay, overnight at the town dock (a good chinese up Torwood Street, forgot the name) and the following day sailed around to Dartmouth for some serious culinary excellence!

They quote: "Set in arguably the best location in Dartmouth in a stunning historic building with views over the estuary, The Angel, Dartmouth has a long history as a fine dining restaurant."

It won't fill you for those cold estuary evenings, but the taste and presentation. admittedly it was back to pasties the following day which were also great!

We got some information from Discoverdartmouth.net which also has the point weather station display in realtime. Look under "Plan your visit", plus a bunch of webcams. You'll need the dingy/tender, unless you're to get ripped off by Dartmouth council with their water taxi!
