101 here we go /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A couple of interesting themes running on this thread.

1 - "All I see are XXX so the new ones can't be that good". Well considering the newer ones are new to the EU zone it's not at all surprising is it. Here the new ones have been sold for a few years. It is very apparent the days of the plows and the older are on the way out. Yes there will always be some of the older more specialised but generally the days of the CQR are numbered. It is very easy to see that here. The Uk/EU will be following in a year or 2 I'd suggest.

2 - Dodgy anchor salesmen. As a few here will be well aware I'm prone to jumping in and having a crack at any dodgy info I see any anchor maker write, just suss the CF forum linked to earlier to see what I mean, Oh quite ugly it is. I've no reason to do so on this thread. In fact I'd like to quote this bit from Craig re his Rocnas
[ QUOTE ]
We want to produce, and believe we have produced, an anchor that will set itself in response to a load automatically and with the greatest reliability possible.

[/ QUOTE ] I do genuinely agree with him here. The Rocna will set itself just with the boat leaning on it, seabed type willing obviously. Obviously to do a quick deep-set you'll want to put a but of motor onto it. The ability of the anchor (and sorry Craig) along with at least 2 other anchors of similar ilk is one of the real big bonus's the new ones have. They take away the need to have lots of technique for the average weekend warrior.

3 - Technique is important, absolutely no question about that. Just as the rode between the boat and anchor is also for optimum performance.

4 - Please use an anchor before having a crack at it. Sorry but one or 2 here have made statements about anchors I'm 99.9% sure they have never used.

5 - If you current CQR, Bruce, Delta or whatever works fine and you're happy with it why change? Seems silly to do so for no apparent reason. Next time you're looking for an anchor check out the new ones, I'm 99% sure you'll be happier if you did. As much as Craig would love to sell everyone a new anchor I'm sure he would agree.... even if grudgingly /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

6 - How nice everyone is playing nicely. Well done.

7 - Who's thirsty and is it Beer O'Clock yet?

Disclaimer - I sell, test and use anchors but I don't make them except for bog standard grapnels for toy boats. I sell, amongst others, the Rocna, the Manson range and I'm the local Spade agent. My comments are made from experience both as a user and from 100's of customer feedbacks which we activly solicit. I do know Craig personally but I also know the other 'combatants' as well. No, none of the squeaky bottomed buggers pay me anything for any reason, shame really I need a new Spinnaker /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Dare I say it, the \"A\" word ... Anchor advice ....

Hi

I am Richard Cluver owner of the yacht Tasman currently lying Cleopatra Marina in Preveza Greece. Yesterday I picked up a dialogue about layovers in the Ionian and wanted more. Has anyone laid over at Trizonia Marina in the gulf of Corinth and can offer comment on costs. Any other affordable marinas in that area?

Re: Dare I say it, the \"A\" word ... Anchor advice ....

Hi Tasman, I think you really wanted to start a new thread with that question but here is my quick reply: Trizonia is a beautiful place, but it is no 'Marina'. It is one of those Greek 'white-elephant' marinas were the pontoon infrastructure is built but there is nothing more done - no 'marina services', no mooring lines etcetera. That said, it is a popular place and many yachts winter here. You can get water from some of the houses in the area, bring a long hose. You are close to some very nice restaurants in the village. Again, I would recommend the place, if you don't expect any services.
