A non boaty post but someone on here hopefully knows the answer...

I'm thinking of refinishing a table with varnish. Can anybody recommend an easy way to remove the current coating, which is danish oil? The table is solid beech.

Thanks in advance.

I 'phoned Rustins with the same question a year or two ago. From a company with an incredibly good tech support guy, the answer was a little disappointing. There isn't a solvent that they could recommend.

I ended up using Colron soft finish remover, then Nitromors and green scourer pads - both strippers were equally effective, just ran out of the former. Got 99% of it off, which was OK for what I wanted (teak garden furniture, since left covered and raw, much nicer).

You can varnish over Danish Oil, ...

When I gave up using Deks Olje in favour of Epifanes varnish I had no problem. Simply rubbed down the surface and applied the varnish. However, I think this would only apply to traditional varnishes. Polyurethane varnish might craze.
