I know, The Semtex was the Initiator, not the detonator. Detonator in the Semtex, Semtex initiating booster for Anfo.
Yes. Anyone with A-level chemistry can make perfectly acceptable explosives; that's the easy bit! But reliable detonators are another kettle of fish entirely.

When I was responsible for explosives in the mid 70s, it always seemed crazy to me that dynamite had to be kept in a secure magazine, but detonators were kept in a box bolted to the outside of the magazine where anyone with a hacksaw could get them.

One of the specialised liquid chemical carriers run by Hamburger Lloyd (I used to do 'some' work for the CEO) ran aground at Sines on the Portuguese west coast. Bit of a cerfuffle, as it was carrying Naptha or Acetone. 8K tonnes of it. Got sorted with no big bang.

I saw an IED once ( rendered inert for demo purposes) where Railway Detonators had been used. I'm sure you know, they require compression to detonate not impact, and so the device had failed. Fortunately an amateur builder on that occasion..
