.. so having been hit on my mooring by a 600 ton freighter travelling at 2 knots, my insurance company sends down a surveyor who spends a couple of hours doing a thorough job assessing the damage. Superficially not much wrong but he tells me that I will have to have a 3' x 1' section of hull cut out and replaced.
So far so good. He then tells me that I should get two quotes for repair. I ask him for a copy of his report to show the yards who will be quoting but he tells me that the survey is for the insurance compay and not me.
OK he's recommended a couple of well known yards to quote - but they're not surveyors and I will have no idea whether they will find all the problems that he has detected.
Is this usual? Will there be informal contact between the surveyor and the repair yard about what needs to be done? .. or do I have to hire another surveyor which would make three in all - mine, my insurance company's and the third party's.
