There was a boat in the orwell called Mike Hunt....did,nt think anything of it untill a group of us where sitting on the deck drinking beer and two females with wet gear and overnight bags approched us.....one of them said "have any of you seen Mike Hunt"....laugh everytime I think of it
There used to be a pair of International Moths racing at our local club 'Shying Flite' and 'Fryer Tuck'. There was also the owner of a Hornet 'Overdraft' whose next boat was 'Automatic Overdraft' and the last in the series? 'Another Automatic Overdraft'. The Cherub 'Cupid Stunts' and the somewhat ageing Laser 'Jurassic Barque' are just afew more from the "creative" world of Dinghy names!!
AFTICA: Another ***king Thing I Can't Afford
Costa FF: Costa ***king Fortune
Olympic Flame: The boat that never goes out.
Jaundice: Seen on a Yellow Hulled J24
JY Kelly: Another J24 Name
My new acquisition is called Fair Breeze, which is a lovely name and I won't be changing it. But I reckon we're definitely in for a career of contrary winds, long tacks and really heavy blows as a result. For clues on what the dinghy's going to be called, you'll have to check my profile...
Many of the GK names listed below fall into the category of amusing rather than daft.
Flying Fifteen fleets seem to be good at this - names tend to have a double eff. Perhaps the best is UffaFoxSake.
A worthy try is an Etchells 22, sail number 42, called The Answer Is.
When I've the time I will go through all these and add to this list compiled over the last time the subject was raised.
Clever names on boats

Has anyone seen clever names on boats/yachts? While gazing at the geometric configurations of the mast boom and rigging of a beautiful yacht I realised why she had come to be called SOHCAHTOA.
Thank you, Pythagoras.
When I used to race Fireballs, there was a yellow one that had been rebuilt after being t-boned by a competitor. It was called Banana Split. Then there was Richard Jobbins 'ball which was graced by a medical term (I think) Slapadikinthomy.
Westerly GK24 and 29 cruiser racers attracted lots of invention around the GK theme. I remember Get Knotted, Granny Knot, Gim Kracker and Gate Krasher, but I'm sure there were many more.
I'm not sure whether it's truth or myth, but there were supposed to be two sister yachts. One was called Beat Up, the other Run Down.
My boat park contains a large, noisy and slippery looking motor baot which is ashamed of the name Play d'Eau. My wife's Topper was called Vol au Vent. A regular French visitor to Cowes week was called "Les Copains B'abord" and I've seen one or two "A l'eau c'est l'heure".
My Dad used to race a fireball. He named his boat Pyrosphere.
He now owns a cruiser which he struggles to afford, its called overdraft
Seen a few years ago at the Folly a yacht called Storm with a dinghy Drizzle
It took me a year after owning "LEVARAC" a D. Cheverton Caravel to realise --- well you work it out!
Or what about the Robber called 'Taxman'
Our neighbours' Evasion was originally called....
"Tacks Evasion" They got stopped by just about every Customs boat afloat. It's now called just "Tacks" and is cruising down to the med at the moment.
In Bembridge a guy owns two fishing boats
"Come Quickly" and the later built:-
"Come 2 Quickly"
Our first serious boat was "Wild Rover" and the tender a little oval yellow inflatable was called "Wild Oat"
"Costa Lotta"....
There was 'Puffin' and her tender 'Billy'...
A friend used to have a Mirror dinghy with baggy sails, called it Nora Bateau.
saw a good one in Peurto Banus last week, ROGER OVER, must be great fun on the VHF
There's a Thistle
(17' open deck racing dinghy whose crew are required to hike) called Duncan McRew.
I swear it took me two seasons to work out the meaning of this boat I passed on a weekly (seasonal) basis -
Crapone's Elf.
Rather like the racehorse called "Norfolk and chance"
llamedos, think backwards!
and 'Llareggub'
Boat: POOH, TenderIGLET *
We sold a 35ft Riviera owner called it All Torque.
Then we sold another one who's berth was next to it so he called his More Torque.
My boss named his new Hunter Whai-Koa which is New Zealand Maouri. The pronounciation is Fook-owa.
Then there was “Wantabiggaone” who eventually did, which was named “Gottabiggaone” obviously!
'Passing Wind' and 'Hugh Janus' both on the river Deben.
Crewed for years on boats called Red Otter
The owner's first boat was called Red Hot.
Ring Powerboat in Salcombe called Rodger Ring.
Fox Hat as in where's the Fox Hat.
My kids used to think the Navy had a ship called RIO R ten of course
Speedboat in Falmouth called.......
Phar Canal
Boat=Mary, tender=Little Lamb
I listened and gasped as I heard a language teacher use his boat's name on the radio. "coast guard, coast guard. This is "the Cunning Linguist"."
Reminds me of a group of women folksingers
known as The Mother Folkers, said to be the most carefully pronounced name in folk music ).
Flying Fifteen............'Uffa Fox Ache'........nuff sed......
