Looking at the price of electric winches.Whould it be a daft idea to strategical position an vertical axis electric windlass on the coachouse roof ?.It would lift the headsail and numerious other tasks around the boat at a fraction of the cost cheers bob t

Even Better Daft Idea

As per Dehler some years ago - place an electric winch on a pedestal in the middle of the cockpit. All lines led aft. Will deal with sheets halyards etc.

Not such a daft idea after all...

A Lagoon 410 cat which I sailed on had a horzontal electric windlass for the anchor which was led bank to the chain locker just forward of the mast. All halyards led to the mast and I hoisted the main a couple of times using it. Not really necessary but it was a long sail and I wanted to have a play.

Pretty slow but worked fine, although I did nearly rip the lazyjacks to pieces as I didn't realise the battens had got stuck.

Is the coachroof up to the stress? I guess before long you'll be using it for the bosun's chair as well. ( how heavy is your engineer?) We use the anchor windlass for that bit.....

I was thinking of replacing the manual winch on the coachroof, as this area has been designed to carry the load,I have 10 other winches to play with if the batteries go flat! cheers bobt
