We are in build of vehicle right now which is an open spaceframe, waterproof for deep fording, and has by client demand an audio amplifier built in to a waterproof container. The amplifier has two inputs, one phono, and one 3.5mm jack.
There is no logic to this, but when the vehicle is not going to be doing stupid things crossing rivers, he will be showing off elsewhere on the road.
To that end he wants to add a DAB receiver for radio. I have had a quick google of the junk available.
My question is have any of you chaps used these things, designed to make a normal car stereo a dab receiver?
I can jam it into the waterproof box, and he will have waterproof external sockets, but the real use will be showing off, so I am not too bothered about the toughness of the unit itself.
The idea has got me thinking about some other things we might employ in a couple of our boats, so it is not utterly irrelevant by the way. Any other ideas gratefully received. I cannot change the amp, as he supplied it and it is apparently the dog's doodahs, despite being so basic I need to run a cable to it.

Firstly - unless he likes Radio 3 there's little point in having even a moderate amp and DAB - R3 transmits at 320kb/sec, rest 128 at best. Absolute is quite reliably 128 most are usually down around 80. Music does not sound good that low.

The add-on units are a bit crap.

I'd suggest a Bluetooth receiver for the amp, then he can play whatever he's got on his 'phone. I've got a few of these.

Onboard, i have a Bluetooth soundbar, connected to my phone, using the Radio Player App' i get every radio station in the country :encouragement:

thanks chaps,
the guynis a bit of an audiohead, and says bluetooth is rubbish - I know very little about it myself. It would have made things simpler for me if her would accept bluetooth.
I will have a look at the Pure highway, but I think I will make him buy it himself. Stuff like this grows the job, and never seems to reflect in the price as it should!
Next is to convince him that waterproof boat speakers are not suitable for immersion. I cant see the moving magnet and coil being very tolerant of muddy water.
I told him to just buy a boom box and put it in the car when he needs it, but it fell on deaf ears, ironically.

Umm, didnt you say spaceframe and suggest that it is open enough to get water inside when fording? I think he is being unrealistic if he expects to listen to audio quality in a vehicle like that, Bluetooth will be just fine!

Yes, he wont hear much with the wind noise anyway. We do get some odd requests, but this one is mostly because he had this amp and wants to use it I think!
Ours is not to reason why, merely to reason how.
And make it happen!
Yes, when fording the vehicle will basically submerge and flood to whatever height he has the courage/stupidity to try, the snorkel is at about 6ft... There are no body panels. Not my cup of tea.
