Went to cardiff yc yesterday and between 'a' pontoon and the flyover crashed into something underwater.Hell of a crunch and abrupt stop.Somewhere just after passing the long row of yellow buoys approaching the club.

Are you sure you mean between pontoon A and the flyover? Pontoon A is the furthest from the flyover, pontoon C is the one closest to the flyover. As far as I'm aware there is plenty of water between A and B, where the members pontoon is and between B and C, access to the slipway and visitors pontoons. Only small boats and rowing boats should be between pontoon C and the flyover.

Yes there are some of the smaller yachts and one cat down that side of pontoon C. There is enough depth close to the boats for them to get in and out. At the shore end of the pontoon, where the access pontoon is, there can be less than 1.0m. I've never been over that side in my boat. Away from the pontoon it is only suitable for canoes and the rowing section. It would not surprise me if there were a few Asda trollies etc. that have been dropped of the bridge. The other side of pontoon C was dredged last year all the way down to the visitor pontoons and slipway.
Last year the buoys that mark the approach to the bridge were moved by harbour authority. I don't know if this was due to worries about the depth.

I broke the shear pin on my outboard when driving my inflatable in this area - It is definately very shallow! But it's not an area where anyone needs to go any where near, as our visitors pontoon is the other side of 'C' pontoon where the depth is around 3m. As Allan has said only the smallest yachts in our club go anywhere near this.
