Crusader Sails (Poole)

With sails more than most things you get what you pay for. Find out how much they do themselves, ie. design, cutting etc or is it farmed out. Do they come and measure up, what is the choice of fabric, reef fittings, spreader patches and all the other bits and pieces. Then ring round the other makers eg. Quantum Parker and Kay at the top of the price/quality range dropping down to the likes of Hood, Sobsad, Kemp etc. A few phone calls can give you serious negotiating leverage.

I haven't used Crusader, but recently had a new 150% genoa built by Arun sails. I've used it for 2 seasons and am very pleased with it. Have a look here .

They were competitive on price also.

Re: At Libs

I did the rounds of the sailmakers and ordered a tri radial cruising shute and a boom cover from Crusader.

I asked the question you asked here and was told that they make a decent sail for cruising but you need to chase them fo delivery. I was quoted 6 to 8 weeks and am told the sail is leaving them today.

The reason I chose them was they're easy to deal with. Their computer database had the relevant measurements for my boat, their quotes are instant and clear, the price is competitive. I'm still waiting for quotes from some of their competitors.

I'll let you know what the workmanship is like when the sail arrives.

My sails all came from Rockall and Arun, and the oldest, the main is starting to show signs of age and needs a few seams seeing to. This will be its 17th season of use.

Also try Kemp Sails - good quality and competitive, especially if ordered from the LBS.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

My family have had sails from Crusader for years, in our experience they are well made and set well too. As for longevity, my parents own a set of their long distance cruising spec sails that are eight years old, now in Greece and still going strong. I now have a mainsail by them on my own Achilles, and have recently ordered a new roller reefing genoa from them.
They've always been helpful, and when we want new sails, we generally don't bother looking elswhere any more..

I have a No 3 from Crusader made 2 yrs back. It works and is the right size and shape, but somehow it lacks appeal, especially in the detail finishing which all looks a bit cheap and nasty. Mind you, it pulls like a train in winds over about 22kts apparent.

I had to chase them quite hard on delivery.

You could try Chris Skanes of Sails and Canvas in Topsham. Last season he made me a hand made genny to my specification and undercut the next cheapest quote by about £50. Lovely sail that sets beautifully and rolls well. 01392 877527

Hi

I ordered a new mainsail from them just before Christmas, it arrived early this week. At a first glance it looks OK, however I have not been down at the boat yet, and seen it hoisted. I will be able to give you a better idea after the weekend but so far I'm happy enough - Cruisader have made it on more or less the timescale they advised and for the price they quoted. Like others say you probably get what you pay for but even this will be a million times better than my old mainsail (as long as it fits!!!)

They're OK.

We've got a cruising chute from them and saw Contender sailcloth beforehand and they use Contender - among others so quality should be OK.

Thanks for all replies.

Mission accomplished!

Main and mizzen now ordered in tan. Crusader seem very helpful, price is right and the delivery date quoted is OK.

Genoa on hold for now until I get the furling gear on, at which pont I can measure properly!
