What is your boats cruising range/hrs (under power) ? and what type of boat?

Shipman 28
Fuel tank 65ltrs
Cruising range @ 2300rpm 165nm or 32.5hrs
cruising speed 5knts
Engine Nanni diesel 21hp new 2010
burning 2ltrs p/h
3 blade fixed prop

Or do you even know?
Im interested in your results if you know them as i spent this weekend working out mine.
Maybe i was too lazy in the past because i never went too far afield but i was curious to see what the consumption was, and giving my 3 blade fixed prop, its very close to the engine manufacturers estimated consumption on the manual.

Mine in very rough figures and imperial is:

heavy displacement long keel £2 ft Barbary ketch motor sailor

twin 40 gal tanks

45 HP vetus 5 years old

a cross channel motor uses about 10 gals needles to cherbourg so 60 miles so 6 mpg

240 miles per tank, 480 total, perhaps nearer 500 when I worked it out more accurately

BUT:

would you use all your fuel?

I work on using the top half of my tanks so I always have plenty in reserve: If I motored x channel then for some reason had to turn round before being able to refuel, I could get back home!

For example I was once stuck in alderney for days in fog and they were runing short of diesel ashore cos the supply tanker wouldn`t enter braye and i could see a window to skoot back home.

Also I dont want to suck up any crud from the bottom and also I like to keep the tanks fairly well topped up to reduces condensation and all that follows from that, so I would take your maximum range and halve it for prudent cruising

.
Well, we've motored for two and a half days non-stop, but we did carry some fuel in cans. Tank is 45 litres (I think) and we usually carry 40l when on a long trip, and I reckon we get something a bit less than 1 l/hr at 5kts so 85 litres @ 1.2l/hr =70 hours, or round about three days or 350 miles.

Westerly Conway

Merc 40hp engine...
3 litres per hour (approx)
150 litres in tank

that gives 50 hrs on engine, at 5 knots = 250 miles

Fuel consumption

In the 13 years I've owned my current boat I've so far used 1126.6 litres of diesel in 973.7 hours of engine running, giving 1.157 l/h. My main tank holds 50 l and I carry 2 10 l bottles, so my expected total endurance would be 60.5 h and at 5.5 kn a range of about 333 miles.

Obviously, as others have said, I don't check to see if I could manage this in practice. :D

Etap 30, Volvo 2002, Kiwiprop.

7 mpg at 8.5 knots. About twice that at 5 knots on one engine - I can just about manage 1000 miles with 2 x 140 litre tanks.

Vancouver 34
Yanmar 3GM = 2 liters per hour at 6 knots
Tank capacity = 180 liters
Range = 90 hours or 3.75 days or 540 NM

Benny 411
Volvo D2 55hp
Volvo folding prop
Tank is 150 litres
Consumption at 2000rpm approx 5 l per hr
Endurance therefore 30hrs
Max distance therefore approx 210mls ( ish )

We do carry a small amount spare on board in cans.

EDIT According to Mr Volvo ( see below ), consumption ought to be about 4 l per hr at 2000. So that would suggest
Endurance 37.5 hrs
Max distance therefore approx 262mls ( ish )

Colvic Countess 33 Bilge keel with a 38hp Layland Daf
I zero an hours run trip meter every time I fill up and record the hours and fuel used, my consumption ranges from 2 ltrs / hr in economy mode at about 4.5 knots to 3 ltrs / hr at about 5.5 knots.
I have never run at full thrutch for long enough to get meaningful figure for that.
With the 212 ltr tank I can get from 70 to 100 hrs or 380 to 450 miles (maybe even 500 miles if I use my 20 ltr reserve can).

PS - When the hull is clean it is better :o

Westerly Seahawk 34.
Fuel tank 135 litres + 6 x 10 litre diesel cans in stern locker = 195 litres.
Range approximately 300 to 500 miles, allowing 20% reserve.
Cruising speed 6 knots.
Consumption about 0.3 to 0.5 litres per mile (2000 to 2500 rpm, dependent on sea state).
Beta 38hp driving a three bladed Bruntons Autoprop, both installed 2009.

Pleased with the set up.

Bavaria 38 Ocean
Volvo MD22L (50 HP)
Tank 230 Ltrs (50 Gals)
2.5 Ltrs per hour at 2200 RPM ~ 6.5 kts
Range 90 hrs ~ 500 miles (to empty)

Rustler 44
85 hp Nanni
Maxprop
1575nm at 5.5 knots 1200rpm
744 nm at 7.1 knots. 1900rpm
367nm at 8.4 knots 2400 rpm

The slower you go, the further you go.
