UMMMMMM.... Left Wicklow 1030 ... off Morfa 1430 ...

That's better than a high speed ferry!!!!

When I last did the same passage (ending up at Porth Dinllaen in the wee small hours under a new moon) I was testing an early Furuno GPS and the entry to Porth Dinllaen was not easy. The key to entry was the street lights in Morfa resembling a cross. Then once the golf clubhouse lights showed it was a right hand turn into the darkness to pick up a vacant buoy ....

Now that we know how NOT to do RYA secondary port calcs, we anchor on firm sand using a variety of anchors that either reset or drag. (CQR does not mean what the acromym ought to mean!!! .... and Fortress might just mean non-setting 'Flying Fortress' ... and Rocna might just mean rolly-poly-steam-pudding 'Woking all over the wurld in drag' ...... It's all in the test on various bottoms .... Seems like a foldaway Fisherman with deadman prongs still works on all bottoms .... even if the scope is reduced below 4:1 .... )

Check your times!!!!

Leg still seems to be holding up, which is reassuring. Bit difficult to get down there and have a close look though as it's a long one. I'll paddle round for a close look in the flubber.

This post will confuse everyone, except you and me :)

No problem. You've got a touch of gout but being a little corpulent, you cant see your leg unless you get in the flubber and stretch out. Correct?

Its good to do these things and reconfirm our own ability instead of relying on machines all the time. An interesting article in the Scotsman newspaper yesterday stated that people are loosing confidence to make decisions resulting in indecisive behaviour. Apparently the abundance of choice and reliance on technology is depriving the brain of the relevant synaptic exercises.

Well that's exactly what I thought, so I gave it a go. It was nothing remarkable, just a bit of fun to liven up a drizzly day. I reckon Durara up there was being sarcastic, but he's boogered off and failed to explain any more.

Three hulls three times faster than one?

Maybe he thinks you need to check your times because he only has one hull in comparison to your three.

What was your average speed for the trip.

Totally agree

Agree with both with the above and the OP.

We should all be able to do it without GPS - it's just a bonus. And we should test ourselves once in a while.

I first crossed the Channel without GPS after the yacht's GPS had given up and then my handheld died in a severe squall. So nothing but EP from Alderney to Yarmouth.

But we found EC1 within 100m in fog and found The Needles exactly where we thought they would be - extremely rewarding. As is pilotage in a challenging environment. Builds confidence like nothing else.

I don't use my GPS now other than: to check it's working; check on student (either their position or whether they check datums before using one on board!).
