I am close to buying a boat in Zadar,I would like to use it for charter in the summer. Seem to be running into some red tape and wonder if any one else has been through the process. It is croatian flagged, if i leave it like this I can escape vat and tax but I am being told I must set up a Croatian company with either a Craotian person or i must get a business license. Alternatively I can uk flag it , will i then have to comply with MCA coding rather than local ?seems to be mixed views on this.Would be interested to hear from anyone who has done this. Cheers.

Can't help, really, but I do know that to buy property in Croatia, you need to have a Croatian company or have the house in the name of a Croatian national. Lots of people are buying, tho', so it seems surmountable.

Can't help with Croatia, but we had the same situation in Greece until recently. We have a Greek-flagged charter boat with a Greek partner. It was a nightmare doing the paperwork at first but now we are used to it its very straightforward, and a lot cheaper than having a UK flagged boat.
Having just been through an RYA/MCA inspection we realise that the local standards are a lot lower too - we've had to spend a lot to get up to RYA standards for a school we are opening.
My only advice would be to choose your partner carefully and get a good lawyer. An don't expect to make a lot of money!
Cheers

I think Zadar does have a few Internet cafés but what I shall be doing is buying a Cronet sim card and using my phone as a modem for my Powerbook. You now get a good signal pretty much everywhere, even behind the furthest Kornati islands.

I have my boat in Charter last two years. Boat was under foreign flag and I made arrangement with one croatian charter company. They prepare everything but financially it looks like this:
For 1 year boat obtain 24000 EUR
30% is for Croatian comp.
All expences such as charter licence 100 EUR, charter registration ( 3000 EUR for half year, maintenance, ....)are yours.
...At the end you have between 11000 and 12000 EUR from that bussines.
If you have Croatian flag than you need only Charter licence and bussines have to go thru croatian company ( you can establish it) and you entering in VAT system.22% off each charter arrangement you have to pay.
It is little better than making charter with forign flag but gennerally is same. You loose money in booking and maintening. You can not imagine what charter guests can do with boat in 15 weeks of season - and you must to pay all.
