Croatia will be lowering annual tourist tax for yachts.

Speaking personally, outside of Dubrovnik (a city that sold its soul for the tourist Euro) I've never found a posh bar in Croatia! There might be one or two in Split or Zagreb I guess. Lovely picture of St Euphemia's btw.

Maybe I'm more downmarket than I thought .... I found they are often attached to marinas .... outside marinas I've always found down to earth friendly places to eat.

Thanks, I had to go ashore to take the picture as the boat wouldn't stay still for a long exposure. I do like Rovinj.

Interesting to read some of these comments. I'm not sure of the idea of Dalmatia not being Croatian culturally. It's "belonged" to all sorts over the centuries: Liburnians, colonists for "Greca Magna", Romans, Ragusa, etc and after WWI Italy wanted much of it, but ended up with Istria instead till 1945.
Croatia is actually pretty poor and relies heavily on tourism for income. (c 20% last time I looked, which was 3 weeks ago.)
As to rude marina staff; this is largely cultural. I think Slavs, generally, have different social mores to us; just as Arabs do. They tend to be a bit blunt/ stand-offish, unless they have been taught how to speak to other Europeans. It's not necessarily rude. The language somewhat encourages that.
If someone seems exceptionally rude then reply with a smile, and say, "Bog te jebo" (Pron: Bog tee yebo) or "U pičku materinu" ( OO pitchkoo materinoo) It is always an icebreaker.
If it's a lady, and you are male, " Hočes li spavati s menom?" is good. (Hoches li spavatee sss menom)
Hvala! But curious that you don't mention the Venetian Republic, which is after all responsible for the architectural heritage of the entire coast and was Dalmatia's mistress for five hundred years or so (as it was of Istria too), hence the Italian claim. Until 1945 all of the Istrian coast, much of its hinterland, Fiume (Rijeka) and Zara (Zadar) were majority Italian. In one of his less glorious moments, Churchill agreed to bomb Zara's historic heart at the request of Tito, not for any military reason (the ostensible one was that it was a German naval base; there were two torpedo boats) but to encourage the local population to leave ... for good. All of which is neither here nor there, but when you go to Lis and the info board mentions the Greeks and Romans and then leaps to Croatia (leaving out the fact that it was actually British for a while (let alone Venetian) – whence Hoste island and Fort St George and the military cemetery – and was also TIto's and the Allied base when all the mainland was lost – then one feels that the Croatian authorities are taking a rather cavalier view of history. And that they have a massive hang-up.
Slavs are indeed different but. I live surrounded by them but 'my' ones are Slovene and not at all like Croatians who I have noted have a rather large chip on their shoulder: huge versus Italians but also pretty large with regard to Slovenes (and let's not mention the Serbs). So yes, they are generally rude, but I have found that they become less rude when they find that the chap (me) stepping off the Italian boat is actually British... Which infuriates me as it suggests they have a rather developed inferiority complex. Having said that, the young are generally very different and much more relaxed.
I would suggest that if you were to say Bog te jabo, the response might not be 'Thank you very much, sir'!

I remember Rovigno before the marina was there... and there weren't any posh bars then! Nor were there the hordes of tourists.

Bog te jebo- znam, ali ta je bila moja mala šala.
I think you meant Vis? Anyway, it seems everyone has owned their bit of Croatia at some point, and Tito was not without reproach.

Well before I started sailing in Croatia ... I was still on the west coast of Scotland back then.

.... just like to ask a quick question as you're in Trieste and may have more accurate information ... can you transit Slovenia into Croatia yet or are the borders closed?

You can allegedly go from Slovenia to Croatia IF you have a second home in Croatia, a hotel booking, job or such (no mention of by sea). Croatia does not yet seem to have opened its borders to people from Italy. Probably things will change around mid-month. Talks are under way to open Austria and Slovenia at least to Friuli Venezia Giulia residents (infection rates very similar in all three cases) but it's not clear how Italy could bend the rules to allow some of its nationals abroad but not others (especially as it is not the Italian authorities stopping travel abroad for Italian residents, so in a sense it would be a retrograde step). Here in FVG no masks required in the open as of yesterday! Austria is also closed so you couldn't come down anyway! I'll let you know as things change.

I went once, 20 years ago. It just felt to me that everyone was out to relieve me of as much money as possible. Whilst I don't expect freebies it just seemed that they couldn't wait to pounce on you with a bill.
Never went again.

I’ve heard so many unpleasant stories about sailing in Croatia, from rude/unpleasant marina staff, through Illicit demands for anchoring fees, tourist taxes that make your eyes water and on to awful weather conditions that I don’t think I’d ever go there. I know that it has it’s adherents as a beautiful destination but it seems that unless you are prepared to jump through hoops of fire for several years to find out the wrinkles then it’s a non starter.
You don't want to believe every thing you read .
Has it happened if your boat is over 12 mts it's now cheaper in Croztia then it is in greece .
Yes agree if your a marina or town wall/mooring buoy guy ,its eye watering but if your happy to anchor it's no more expensive anywhere else .

You miss out on the best cruising ground in Europe.

Well, quite honestly there are so many other places in the World that I want to see before I shuffle off. So I don’t have to sail in places that get a bad press for whatever reason. If I was going to visit the area I’d go by ’bike.

Latest: the border between Slovenia and Italy (and probably between Slovenia and Austria) will open on the 15 June.

Good news :) I've been doing some digging too ....

With effect from 16 June 2020 free travel between Austria and Croatia

Austria: lifting of quarantine from 16 June 20 (return of Croatia)

To get into Croatia more quickly, they advise pre-registering here :

Enter Croatia

I'm planning to go Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia on the 19th June ... will post on my experiences.

But your location is listed as Ammersee? Unless that is a clever ploy, I believe it is in Bavaria.

My biggest worry was getting stuck somewhere between Austria and Croatia ... if Austria refuses to let me in on the trip down, then I turn round and go home .... Germany will definitely let German citizens in from Austria coming home. My nightmare scenario was getting stuck on the return journey at the Croatia/Slovenia border or the Austria/Slovenia border and being unable to get back to Germany.

Hence his journey starts in Germany. ;)

Please let us know how you get on Baggy. All I have to do then is clear the UK - France - Belgium - Germany hurdle.

Richard
Well, since we are talking accuracy here, he says about GOING TO GERMANY, not starting from. I wouldn't normally care but some people seem to.

I've just had a Croatian lesson and my teacher, who's in Zagreb at the moment, says that life is going on as normal there. Hotels, restaurants cafes and schools all open. But not today as it's Corpus Christi, or, as I believe it is called in Bavaria, Fronleichnam, Not sure about the borders but unlikely to be shut- if you are a German citizen.

Nope. Baggy says "I'm planning to go Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia" and definitely does not shout "going to Germany" as that would be rather rude and he is, if nothing else, a gentleman. ;)
