It appears that there is a bill before the Croatian parliament that will lower the tourist tax for boats in Croatia. Excellent news because it is f***ing expensive. I couldn't find the English version of the story but here is the German version translated to English. There is also compensation for any owners who have already paid for 2020 !!! .. too good to be true?

seem they see how important boat tourism is for their country. Interesting how it will be in July and August. We are going to spend 3 weeks in C in August. Italy to Murter...

Indeed- been there and done that as they say. Problem, from a British perspective is that they are full of boats from owners in S German and Austria, who, generally, don't have far to go to get there. Maybe work and servicing is a bit cheaper? I don't know. But whereas even with the current rubbish exchange rate, most things are cheaper in Croatia by c 10% vs UK, marinas are not. I was supposed to be there in 3 weeks' time on a language course, but that has fallen victim to Covid. I go to an annual course and have seen some places the average tourist wouldn't. Like, last year, Osijek and Vukovar. Vast, empty, flat landscape with masses of agriculture and still the decaying buildings of collective farms there.

PS My last charter was from Marina Hramina on Murter. It was not a good experience. I'd avoid them now. But looks like that is where you are ending?

Please forgive my ignorance, as I am only in the planning stages of my great escape.
Are you talking about the 'Sojourn' tax? which I have found current prices.
Or the annual Cruising Permit, 'Vignette' which I cannot find out any clue as to how much it might cost.
Croatia is part of our future plans, but I cannot seem to find any concrete info or current prices (for reference we should be on a 12-15m boat with 4 berths)

Vignette is relatively inexpensive. I can give you the formula if you wish but for our 12m cat with two 30hp engines it's around 500 Kuna per calendar year.

The Sojourn Tax is, or was, the stinger at 3000 Kuna for the year, especially if you only have two people on the boat. Last year, for the first time in 10 years, I did not pay 12 months but paid for each visit.

Have a look here ... Fee calculator (incl. tourist tax) for Croatia holidays by boat

Put in your boat length, engine power and length of stay (where you will be on the boat, not how long the boat will be in Croatia) and the number given is the total amount payable. This includes light dues for navigation in Croatia, called "Travel Fees"(Vignette), and tourist tax (soujourn fees) for the length of time you will be aboard your boat - it runs continuously, so if you visit regularly throughout the year or are a live-aboard then choose 1 year. This is the most expensive part and also the part they are revising. I normally take a year as this allows me to come and go as I please all year round.

The whole thing stinks. What other country charges you to drive in? Do you pay for the traffic lights when you go to France? Or a higher tax (or any tax) because you have an 8-seater vehicle? Of course not: you pay for a service you choose: motorway, parking etc.

Our opinions on this match perfectly. It's just a way to relieve rich people of their money, after all, as boat owners we're all rich right?

I’ve heard so many unpleasant stories about sailing in Croatia, from rude/unpleasant marina staff, through Illicit demands for anchoring fees, tourist taxes that make your eyes water and on to awful weather conditions that I don’t think I’d ever go there. I know that it has it’s adherents as a beautiful destination but it seems that unless you are prepared to jump through hoops of fire for several years to find out the wrinkles then it’s a non starter.

Well I've chartered there 4 times plus done a delivery top to bottom then onto Greece and other than some expensive marinas and the odd bad weather day it's a fabulous sailing destination. Tourist tax was about £7 a day iirc. It can be busy in certain areas especially the islands off Split. Why not try it yourself before dismissing it.

Well, quite honestly there are so many other places in the World that I want to see before I shuffle off. So I don’t have to sail in places that get a bad press for whatever reason. If I was going to visit the area I’d go by ’bike.
(Rich) parents of my parents had two yachts... with crews (this was back in the 70s or 80s) and had sailed all over the world. They claimed that the best combination of scenery, sailing and history was to be had in Dalmatia... I have sailed there since it was Yugo, and frankly, from a selfish point of view, it was much better then. Now it's as beautiful as ever but overcrowded, overfished and overpriced (and when Croatians start banging on about how Marco Polo was actually Croatian ... well, you have to laugh. Dalmatia was never Croatian culturally but that's not what they want you to hear ... sorry, off-thread).
But yes, do go: and it's only by boat that you get to see the best parts.

Interesting to read some of these comments. I'm not sure of the idea of Dalmatia not being Croatian culturally. It's "belonged" to all sorts over the centuries: Liburnians, colonists for "Greca Magna", Romans, Ragusa, etc and after WWI Italy wanted much of it, but ended up with Istria instead till 1945.
Croatia is actually pretty poor and relies heavily on tourism for income. (c 20% last time I looked, which was 3 weeks ago.)
As to rude marina staff; this is largely cultural. I think Slavs, generally, have different social mores to us; just as Arabs do. They tend to be a bit blunt/ stand-offish, unless they have been taught how to speak to other Europeans. It's not necessarily rude. The language somewhat encourages that.
If someone seems exceptionally rude then reply with a smile, and say, "Bog te jebo" (Pron: Bog tee yebo) or "U pičku materinu" ( OO pitchkoo materinoo) It is always an icebreaker.
If it's a lady, and you are male, " Hočes li spavati s menom?" is good. (Hoches li spavatee sss menom)

I don't find Croatia any more or less friendly than any other country - it's the nature of yachting generally - it attracts too many moderately well off, arrogant and rude boat owners or charterers with an entitled attitude - the locals reflect that back. Sail a beaten up AWB and dress in sun bleached old clothes and you'll get a good reception almost anywhere - except the up-market bars and restaurants, but I avoid them and they avoid me.

The scenery and islands are fantastic, I have so many happy memories - been in northern Croatia since 2011 and it's a wonderful sailing area. It can be as busy or as quiet as you want, just pick your overnight stops accordingly.

Speaking personally, outside of Dubrovnik (a city that sold its soul for the tourist Euro) I've never found a posh bar in Croatia! There might be one or two in Split or Zagreb I guess. Lovely picture of St Euphemia's btw.
