It's tricky you don't want to frighten people and much of what you say is forgotten.
I try and break the ice with this: tongue in cheek obviously but it gets peoples attention

I agree. Different people have such varying amounts of interest and patience.

Also varying attitudes to risk. So a good briefing sometimes needs to 'comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable'.

I have been known to say
Today's trip is free of charge . But if you want to get off the boat there will be a fee of £50.
I have yet to receive payment but the guests have always brought good company and their fair share of food and drink.

I don't expect crew duties but those who insist are given simple duties - usually involving mooring lines (even that can go wrong) .
Usually the only order I give is sit down and stay which sometimes works .
