Crew Choice and Annoying posters....

I am sure this has been gone through before on here 100 times but I have not noticed it since I started posting

Its also the beginning of the season so I will not be the only one thinking like this..

I try and keep up with Scuttle Bucket and Reader to reader, but cannot help judging some posters... In fact if I ever had the option to sail with some of you I would check your past posts

Some themes that annoy me are:
1, Posts on every thread of a certain subject and will not leave it lie,
2, Belittling anyone if they get chance,
3, Give smart a*&s back answer then say it should be discussed in the lounge (seen that trick by one poster a couple of times),
4, Can never joke or take a joke,
5, Cannot understand that boats CAN be sailed on small budgets,
6, Those that can, never leave a subject lie,
7, I have this, I teach, I do this so I know best...
8, Those that do not apologise when wrong.

All properties that I would not want in a crew...

On the other hand there are always the kind ones the nice comments etc on the forums the ones you would be proud to be invited to sail with...

There is one or two respected Sailing School's round the Solent I would not let my partner do any courses with after seeing some of there teaching.

This just comes to mind as I want to find a crew or 2 for me and SWMBO. Its difficult allot of our sailing is weekday and not compatible with office hours...

1) Enough experience but not so much as to over shadow SHMBO.
2) Some one who can bring her confidence, but not belittle her and keep it fun.
3) To ALLOW ME to or ideally be able to show SHMBO the ropes as such whilst sailing etc.
4) To increase her confidence in her abilities,
5) The last thing I need is a crew who rushes every thing/ over complicates things.
6) Some one who can resist the temptation and cruise a racing boat not race it..

The boat we have bought is kind of racey and a BIG step up for SWMBO. I know we can handle her but its a BIG step for SWMBO.

Its a difficult place SWMBO given a jib sheet will ask me what to do... I trim the sail and she will tell me I have it wrong (and she will be right ).

I am starting to think that a friend who is nearly or novice is probably better than an unknown... Then SHMBO will get confidence teaching?

Thoughts? suggestions? volunteers?

If you own a bavaria, im out, don't want to end up turtled wondering where the keel is.

However if you don't own a bavaria but don't have any RYA Certifcates im also out as i think its completely irresponsible of you.

Lets not forgot Anchors, they have to be right surely? Otherwise your a danger to other boat owners. Catch my drift? "*Drift* sorry "
I'm also a tree hugger so prefer it if you didn't anchor above seahorses.

On serious note I love crewing on a different boat to my floating Caravan, I count my self as a complete novice in yachts. After sailing for 10 years (dinghies) i still don't know what all the ropes do on my boat, i have only got about 6.
Although i think i would fall down on point: 6) Some one who can resist the temptation and cruise a racing boat not race it..

When I am sailing with crew they are there for fun and that is my main priority, I am a great believe that good sailing should be fun for all.

Although I do try and keep a boat sailing efficiently.

For all my encouragement my X wife was never a keen sailor, she liked being afloat but did not want to handle a rope (her mother was same). As some friends pointed out when we had a cruise in company "you are really single handed aren't you".

I got too good at doing things quickly and efficiently without a crew.

for No6, SWMBO has started to spot the signs of me starting to get "tweeky" and I recieve a firm "NO", like a naughty puppy some times it works .

I had sailed most of my life and for the last 6 years the same boat (basically single handed) I could probably put the sail her blind folded in open waters. She had never sailed before she met me, she has no other comparison it makes it hard.

As for the new boat an early 35' 80's 3/4 tonner, has been set up to be raced by a large crew until very recently. Good space below, sails well but basic below...

Yes I am protective of my new partner around boats, she is a good hand and keen. Even when I have been thinking its to cold or windy she has suggested sailing (of course I do not refuse ).

How many people who can honestly say that?

Have you trie the alternative method whereby you do the crewing and she takes the helm; you may find that she becomes the one that wants to tell the crew to tweak. Its a fact that a fair bit of the enjoyment of sailing is sensinig the speed and attitude of the boat either through the helm or the seat of your pants; if you've sailed dinghies and raced you'll know what I mean. A little coaching won't go amiss with SWMBO but don't always take the helm away from her, let her try berthing the boat too, its all a matter of trust - both ways.
Try it out, you may be pleasantly surprised.
