Credit Card Captain

Charter company told me this was caused by all crew going ashore leaving engine running. Jib wasn't secured so unfurled in strong wind and sheet got caught on throttle and boat then powered itself onto reef after knocking into several others on the way.

But, the jib isn't unfurled at the point the photo was taken.
 
Ah, that was very brave of them, but well done to them!

It's this sort of exchange that encourages me to take the piss out of the word "captain"

"Hi, I'm Captain Tom"
"Hi Tom, it's nice to meet you" replies DaGringoOnStingo
"Its Captain Tom, because I am a qualified Captain"
"Oh well done, Tom"
"It's CAPTAIN Tom"
"Yes Tom. Please feel free to call me John"

... and so on.
 
Most of the US charter companies like to use the term on their "meet our crew" page, I'm guessing as it's a commonly used term rather than to add gravitas.

Isn't uncanny how small omissions cascade into big disasters.

To be fair to Hamble lifeboat i believe " Captain Sandy" appears on a reality TV show skippering a large motor yacht. As such she probably is reasonably entitled to call herself Captain.

That said it does appear to be a ridiculous american affectation where so many job titles make it into the persons everyday identity. Not sure anyone else would refer to school heads as Headteacher Smith or football managers as Coach Smith.
 
I was always told it is not polite to refer to yourself with a title, Mr Dr Captain, etc. Its the progressive of the other person to give you the title.

It is specially true of honorary titles that are bestowed and not earned by qualificies
