I want to create a web site for my boat but don't know which web hoster to use or how the whole web hosting thing works for that matter! I know how to create a web site using Front Page however.
Can anyone recommend a secure web hosting company which is free or fairly cheap? There seems to be so many out there!

Freeserve seem to be OK, they host mine for nothing. The web address you get willl have the word freeserve or something similar in it.

If you sign up for a freeserve account you get internet access, email and web space. You can only unload your website to their server if you are connected to the internet using them. I can't upload from work, so I dial in from home when I want to do this.

You have to log on and read your email from them once a month or something similar, or else they delete your account and you cannot reinstate it. You lose your website when they do this too. I learned the hard way, which is why my website address had to change from www.xrayted.freeserve.co.uk to www.xrayted.fsnet.co.uk.

There are many others who provide this service free as well as Freeserve.

We told the Laird of Lochalsh over afternoon tea, but he didn't seem interested, so we went back with an industrial sized keg of that expanding foam and plugged the hole ourselves. Of course we put far too much in, as eveyone does with that stuff, and it started expanding exponetially. To our horror, a large crack appeared from the corner of the hole, and the bridge started delaminating. We thought about fixing that with a 40 gallon drum of Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure. Instead we ran away.

Who is your current ISP? They probably have free webspace that you can use. Register your domain with a company that give you free web forwarding (eg 123-reg) and put your site on your free webspace. No-one will know you don't have a professional hosting package unless they look at the source code. Total cost £3 per annum for a .co.uk domain name.

But . . . make sure your hosting provider has Front Page extensions installed. (This is a special instruction set on the server that allows the twiddly bitsof Front Page to work - you need to make sure your server has them if you are going to use FP to create your site).

As an alternative, Yachtsite offer a basic website with gallery to cruising yachts (sail only) http://www.bluemoment.com

Try to avoid MSN and geocities as they

a. have pop ups, people like me will quickly move on as I hate advertising, the world has enough, it drives me nuts I tell ya,

moving on

b. Meta search engines such as google (the favourite) will not list geosities sites
c. having your own registered domain is far far better, and only £10 for two years .co.uk

There are many good hosting sites, which IMHO are better than using your IP, since you are likely to change your IP occassionaly, if you externally host you can re-direct email to anywhere, thus not having to send out to everyone your change of address, this can be a right pain.

Also you will be able to check and send mail remotely and if needed upload to your site from anywhere in the world.

A good hosting company IMHO is 34SP, go and have a look http://34SP.com
