I would cold bend one in a vice if need but why wont a straight shorter one do the job

A straight one just might do the job, but one purpose of the cranking is to avoid the shackle pressing against the swivel cap and causing it to unscrew. If the shackle is reversed from the illustrated position, this is likely to happen

It is an essential component of older Plastimo reefing systems except the smallest, 406, but it is only used in the largest (1012 and 1013) of the current range, not the 406, 609, or 811.

It should be available from Seateach. Have you contacted them?

The item in Vyv's link is not currently available

thanks guys came up loads using headboard shackle, I have had 2 minor wraps this year and think one of these would be worth a try before going up mast to fit a block or doughnut.

I think the shackle is for the 608 and 810.

Yes it is essential for the 608 and 810.

But its main purpose is to prevent the shackle coming in contact with the top part of the swivel. If that is jammed by the shackle it can come unscrewed and all your balls will fall out!

On its own it will not prevent halyard wraps . The halyard must be held away, or lead away from the foil at the recommended angle, to prevent that happening. 10 degrees IIRC but check with the installation instructions.

There are two ways of achieving this. One is the use of a diverter disc or wheel fitted to the top of the foil. Although not the only gear to have used this system it is the one you commonly see on Plastimo foils as it can be fitted when a foil is fitted without lowering or climbing the mast.
The other is a fairlead fitted to the front face of the mast. Most easily fitted when the mast is lowered.

Dont wait until you suffer a disastrous wrap. Fit a diverter disc or fairlead.

To go with your picture ( Searush's picture IIRC) of the shackle here are some that show what can happen if an ordinary one is used and it jams the top ring of the swivel
