I have found a 1mm to 2mm crack right across a teak hatch cover that has a round air cover in the middle. It cannot be cramped due to the construction on the back so can only be filled. I want to sand it down and varnish so it must match when done.
what do you suggest?

Open it up with a saw/router and let in a slim piece of teak would be my way.

You could try mixing teack sawdust and expoxy to make a matching filler but I would want to know why it has cracked - is it just a shake or is there insaficiant flexibility in construction for wood to expand and contract, in that case filling could lead to more problems. Try filling with putty as a temp measure and see if it gets squeezed out when the hatch takes up.

inlay a side on piece might be the way as we are trying to refurb the boat and may not have the time to wait and see if the putty will sqeeze out. the frame under the crack is solid, so it appears to be shrinkage as the edges are screws with plugs on top and all look fine.
Would you rub the hatch down first and then insert the piece or would you insert and then rub down the whole?
regards, harry
