CQR anchor

I have a 35lb CQR on my Pentland & it is stored on deck, hooked around the front pulpit upright (behind the fairlead) with the shank tied to the aft upright so it can't slip forward. It is well out of the way of mooring strops or shorelines. We have a lot of overfalls & short steep wind over tide conditions in N Wales & it has never been a problem, even in conditions where I have lifted off the foredeck on the downstrokes. When approaching an anchorage it gets moved to the bow roller while the chain is flaked out. If accidentally left on the bow roller in rough water it has slipped & deployed itself - but it can be tied down to prevent that.

Feel free to spend money on chocks if you like, but they aren't really needed & it will still need tying down in short steep seas.

I don't want to start an anchor debate, but have you thought of buying a Delta? It would be the easiest to stow and could be a slight upgrade in holding power? The proce difference if you sold your CQR might be similar to the hassle factor in fitting anchor chocks and then using them?
Looking at the specs for a Delta, I understand that a 6kg delta would do the job for my Centaur. Would this be good for most lunch stops and overnighters or would you recommend something a bit bigger. I could keep the CQR for perhaps storm use, what do you think?

I think it's the 6KG I have on my 20' Vivacity and it sets very well and holds very well. You're a bit bigger so it's the 6KG or the 10KG depending how paranoid you are but 8m is within the 6KG section so I'd go with that.

CQR is no better for storms unless you're using it as an addition to another anchor - this is a subject of many other threads and magazine articles

Yes, CQR is not so trusty, only on some bottoms. Being old-fashion I'd say only thing to trust as storm anchor is a kind that really makes a hook, like Admiralty or Northill. Many say rocna or spade kind of anchor is even better in storm, as they can set with rode acting upwards. I have no experience with them, but going to try. Had some experience with CQR, though...

I replaced the sizeable but rusty and bent CQR on my Nauticat 43 with a 37kg Delta and the problem I have now is that it holds so damn well I am having to motor it out to prevent it killing the windless! I am sure there are better anchors than a delta but I have had only positive experiences. As others have already said, IMHO flog the CQR and fit a Delta as you already have the stowage sorted and you won't regret it.
